Iraq: Too Bad To Leave, Too Good To Leave?
Our ongoing occupation of Iraq and the Bush (mis-)administration support for what seems like a never ending occupation has created (at least to me) a massive paradox, specifically, according to them, things are supposedly going good over there (or at least MUCH better than what the "critics" and "naysayers" are claiming), so good that you would expect, at this point, Bush et. al to start seriously entertaining, if not embracing, at least a partial troop withdrawal/redeployment. Instead, the opposite seems to be occurring with Bush et. al perpetually arguing instead that "victory" (whatever THAT means) is around the corner as long as their "surge" is given more (and more) time to "work" and vehemently denouncing any and all seemingly reasonable calls for troop withdrawal/re-deployment. While the rest of us are tired of this war (at least +/-70% of us) and don't see any reason to keep all or most of our troops in harm's way for this endeavor indefinitely, they continue to argue that, even after 4+ years of this mess and the "achievements" (dubious though they may be) of the invasion/occupation of Iraq, we need to keep most of our military resources tied down in Iraq (Iran soon?) instead of using it for what we all seemed to agree on as a much worthier goal at one time, namely hunting down and destroying global terrorist networks and more specifically, the perpetrators of the events of 9/11/01. Of course, Bush et. al eschew any talk of "failure" or "defeat", nor will they readily admit that the reality of the situation is much worse than they publicly discuss it as being but they seem to think (and not without some considerable justification, unfortunately) that as long as they continue to warn us that no matter how great things supposedly are over there, they could always be better, caution against any talk of "premature" withdrawal/re-deployment, "gin up" whatever apparent "successes" are achieved in Iraq, and, most importantly frighten us with the specter of Iraq-spawned terrorists storming our beaches, malls, homes, etc. if we leave prematurely they will ultimately get what they seem to really want, which, at this point seems to be an open-ended occupation/presence in Iraq for military and strategic purposes, as well as access to its oil reserves(hey, we didn't invade Iraq for nothing, right?). Indeed, Bush et. al have OPENLY discussed our occupation of Iraq in terms of decades (a la South Korea) and there appears to be a concerted effort now more than ever to prepare us to accept such an endeavor despite the fact that they repeatedly claimed in the beginning Iraq would be a "cakewalk" and that our troops would (presumably) be home in time for the next season of American Idol. There is little doubt in my mind that what we are really witnessing is a massive con job ("string-along") in all its glory being perpetrated by this (mis-)administration against our country and we (and our allies wherever they are and whatever party they belong to) need to do everything we can to prepare to counter this new "propoganda-catapaulting" PR offensive that Bush et. al have begun unleashing against Congress and the public. Our country, at least insofar as I was aware of, was not founded on the nightmare of invading, occupying, and pillaging other countries and it is certainly nothing that any of us should allow to happen in our names.
