MSNBC Breaking: Aviator/Adventurer Steve Fossett missing...
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 02:38 PM by Cooley Hurd
His plane is missing somewhere in Nevada. I'll try to find a link...:(

From Wikipedia:

On September 3, 2007, at 8:45 a.m, Fossett took off in his single-engine Citabria Super Decathlon plane from an airstrip at hotelman Barron Hilton's Flying M Ranch, about 70 miles southeast of Reno in the south end of the Smith Valley, Nevada and headed south. Hilton Ranch is a private aircraft strip.<2> There is speculation that Fossett made an unplanned landing, possibly crashing, in western Nevada.<3> A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson noted that Fossett apparently did not file a flight plan.

1. Doesn't Sound Good At All
Either there will be a miracle, or he's lying dead somewhere.

Someone like him, missing for a full day, means that the outcome does not appear good. I'm guessing with rough terrain, there were not many places he could land safely.

3. Well, if he made it down in one piece...
my money is on him to survive. I hope he does.

4. If He Landed Safely, He's Likely Alive
He's a survivor, so even if he's on his own, he's probably o.k.

I'm just thinking if he was, he might have been able to let it be known he was alive by this point.

7. The Citabria's a rugged aircraft...
...and a good STOL aircraft. I hope he was able to put her down & perhaps had electrical issues which smoked his avionics. But Steve's a smart guy and (I assume) would've tripped his ELT to aid in his rescue.

5. I hope he's alive. But not to file a flight plan was ignorant.

6. K&R. If he'd filed a flight plan it's likely that he'd have been located by now...
:-(

8. If he was VFR, he wasn't required to...
Flight plans are a good thing, but if he was flying in the AM in severe clear, he probably was confident that the flight plan wasn't needed.

9. But it still would have been a wise idea because he's still missing, isn't he?
The fact that it's been well over 24 hours, and they know his general direction, doesn't bode well...:-(

13. Yup, as of this morning, per CNN, there is still no sign of him,
but they are still looking. Richard Branson is willing to bet that he survived...

15. Due to heat in Nevade dessert expert explained that Fossett would need to dig beneath a bush & sleep
He could survive if not injured

14. He's my version of "Missing Blonde Girl", which is DU's term of derision for "WHO CARES?"

He's a rich guy with money burning a hole in his pocket, and setting BALLOON records isn't being an aviation PIONEER, as some reports have termed Fossett (Okay, his single-fuel circumnavigation was cool, but still useless to the larger world of flying).
