"Tsongas Widow, 9-11 Brother to Face Off" Niki Tsongas is running for Marty Meehan's open seat!
Anyone in Massachusetts know how good her chances are?

Tsongas Widow, 9-11 Brother to Face Off
By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer

LOWELL, Mass. - The widow of a beloved senator and former presidential contender will face the brother of a pilot hijacked in the World Trade Center terrorist attacks in a race for an open congressional seat.

Niki Tsongas, the widow of Sen. Paul Tsongas, beat four other contenders Tuesday in the Democratic primary to replace U.S. Rep. Martin Meehan.

Also Tuesday, Republican Jim Ogonowski, whose brother was the captain of American Flight 11, one of two hijacked planes flown into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, easily defeated perennial candidate Thomas Tierney.

"Obviously the impact 9/11 had on me reaffirmed my belief that national security has to remain No. 1, and we have to remain aware that evil in the hearts of just a few people can cause great destruction to this entire country," said Ogonowski, a retired Air Force colonel. On the campaign trail, he often evoked the memory of his brother, John.

In the more competitive Democratic primary, Tsongas finished with 36 percent, or 19,811 votes, with all votes counted. Lowell City Councilor Eileen Donoghue won 31 percent, or 17,373 votes. None of the other contenders mounted a serious challenge.<snip>

2. Niki should win. The turnout was better than anticipated, and this was a shitty day to
hold a primary. It was still beach weather.

She has many friends in these parts, including me.

The Republican contender was related to an unfortunate victim of the WTC attacks. That's his "claim to fame." He's a one-note wonder. Of course, there was no competition on the GOP side really. Just this guy, waving the flag and his brother's corpse, and some goofball who runs all the time. The flag and corpse waver won, but I'll wager Niki will wipe the floor with him come October when they hold the SPECIAL.

Her only serious opponent, the former Lowell Gov, did some pretty heavy push polling in an effort to beat Niki back.

I usually don't take those calls, but I did, just to hear what the tactics would be--it was pretty sharp, and a bit snide, the effort to cut Niki down. I had to tell the pollster that Niki could eat a puppy at high noon on the State House steps, and I'd still vote for her, because she's every bit as sharp as her beloved husband was.

5. Yeah, tell me about it
He sold himself as a moderate but I never bought into it. A lot of people here in Mass did. The Dems candidate, Shannon O'Brien was quite weak IMHO. If they had nominated Robert Reich there woulda been no contest.

12. Notice that they elect GOP governors more than MOCs

And at least in Massachusetts the governor is usually in a full time fight with the Democratic legislature. IMHO the people in Mass. are more likely to vote for a Republican governor when the state Dems put up an embarrassingly inadequate candidate. At least that's the way it was when I lived there.

It's rare that more than one member of Congress from Mass. is a Republican. Tsongas should win handily.

14. Elected, or Diebolded? I always wondered about some of the results from that contest.
That said, his opponent would have been the first female governor in her own right, and she caught a lot of sexist shit, AND could have run a better campaign. Romney spent a FORTUNE buying the State House.

In actual fact, our governor has a hard time without the legislature behind him--and Romney didn't have that. So he went on vacation... a LOT.

13. It was the day after Labor Day, and a beach day par excellence!
I drove over a hundred miles to get back to vote, and then returned to paradise. Some people, still on holiday, or a short drive from the local beaches, just didn't make it back.

Best voting days around here are OCT--that's when people are back at work, back to their routines...but it was the day after a major holiday weekend with PERFECT weather--I'm amazed they got that much, really. There was a lotta griping about the choice of day....

16. It seemed a horrible pick to have it yesterday.
I was amazed too.

You're awesome to drive all that way to vote!

Tsongas was on Greater Boston earlier and was great.I still miss Paul a lot.He was a good man.

11. I wonder if ogonowski is going to go around campaigning with
an urn of some sort with ashes from the WTC and a pic of bush on it. Wouldn't surprise me.

Good luck Niki, I thought your husband was wonderful.
