5. He has to believe it in order to keep his sanity
that is, whatever sanity he has.
If he ever finally admits that Saddam did not have WMDs his head would probably explode from the cognitive dissonance & he might actually face a real moral crisis.
The sight would not be pretty & I actually hope in a way that it doesn't happen while he is still in power -- unintended consequences being unpredicatable.
