New Iraq Chief: Situation "Not Hopeless"
Gen. David Petraeus Officially Takes Control Of U.S. Forces In Iraq

(AP) The new top U.S. commander in Iraq said Saturday that the stakes are high but the situation is "not hopeless" as American and Iraqi forces move to end the sectarian violence threatening to tear apart the country.

Gen. David Petraeus made the comments at a ceremony during which he officially took control of U.S. forces in Iraq from Gen. George Casey, who is going to be the next Army chief of staff.

"The stakes are high. The way ahead will be hard but it is not hopeless," he said on a platform at a former Saddam Hussein palace at Camp Victory. "We can and we must prevail. This mission is doable."

Let's rename this one "President not clueless."

4. Not at all surprising
What did anyone expect him to say? "This whole mission is hopeless."

At least he didn't say it would be completed in 6 days or that the insurgents are in their last throes.

6. It will be hopeless when the people we are supporting, arming
and training turn on us and tell us to get the hell out of their country. What was old is new again.

10. Really, that's the question of the entire B* presidency. Does anyone,
including conservatives, think that this president is actually even attempting to be president? I think it's painfully obvious to everyone on the planet with cable that he took the job just to make it easier to run his failed oil career. He never had the slightest intention of working on behalf of the general public for anything.

8. That is not, what I would call an inspiring speech. This guy is an
administrator, not a military leader. Whoever selected him was looking for a remote controlled rubber stamp, not a military leader.
