CBS Early Show Removes Anti-War Protesters from View in Kansas City
CBS Early Show Removes Anti-War Protesters from View in Kansas City
September 4, 2007 By Matthew Rothschild

On August 10, the CBS Early Show came to Kansas City, Missouri.

Using Liberty Memorial Park, the Early Show was featuring the country western band Big & Rich, which is famous for “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” and for leading audiences in the Pledge of Allegiance.

When the local peace community heard that the Early Show was coming to the park, activists hoped to get their message to a national audience.

“I received an e-mail about the event and a flier from the Early Show inviting people to attend,” says Ira Harritt, Kansas City area program coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). “I rsvp’d, saying some people from the AFSC would be there.”

Harritt recruited people to come and carry some AFSC “Cost of War” banners. These are seven feet long and three feet high, and they all give different answers to the question: “One Day of the Iraq War Equals.” (Such as $720 million, or 84 elementary schools, etc.)

“We started assembling the banners in the park,” Harritt says, “and immediately, a CBS staff person said, ‘You can’t be here. You can’t have those here.’ ”

1. Let Freedom wane.
And to think that I did the things I did in service to this Country.

After the earlier business regarding the arrests in DC and now reading about this, I feel completely and utterly dispirited.

I used to think that when the chips were all falling wrong, I could at least maintain hope.

These days, that is one difficult commodity to come by.

21. "Mommy, I want to save a horse. Can I ride a cowboy?"

Good job, abc, right in line with republican family values. Banners that educate about the some of the realities of (an illegal) war could hurt the children. Let them ride cowboys--then they will be ready to become pages for republican congressmen.

Don't know if they will be able to do anything. We were really excited about the article in The Progressive. That might be the end of the story.

18. I wonder why ABC doesn't want to release THAT series on DVD?!...
It would make a killing... Oh I forget, they don't need to do that to still be known as the "librul media"! Fortunately I got it on old videotapes and have it burned off onto DVD!

10. silly CBS. They are missing the REAL STORY
The real story is that people are getting off their asses and standing up to this shit. If their producer had a brain, moran, he/she/shit would "figger" it out and MAKE it the lead story.

the funny part is that it will happen. They can't stop it, they can't help it, and they can't continue trying to match faux gnus for brain-damaged reporting. It WILL come out, and very soon, that story will become THE story. I suspect this event was the last grasp of ye olde neocon gnus control.

13. I've been wondering about the national morning "news" shows
Particuarly NBC's Today Show. Everyday they go out "amongst the people" and some of the people carry signs, yet no anti-war signs.

How the hell can a corporation dictate what people in public spaces can say?

17. I have several friends who have gone to The Today Show and Good Morning America
with signs against the war and network security has removed them EVERY single time. Bastards. The media is not supposed to control the message.

19. That's what I don't get
How can anyone stop you from carrying a sign in a public area? To my mind that sign is one and the same as free speech.

Upthread you mentioned that the ACLU has contacted you and I am glad that they have because this needs to get before the courts.

20. In our case, we were in a public park and we found out later CBS didn't even have a contract
to use the park, as they claimed. It was merely a verbal agreement. But regardless, they had no right to restrict us from a public park.

I don't know about the shows taped in NYC and what the laws are there.
