Luciano Pavarotti has died. The cause of his death was pancreatic cancer. Here is the official announcement by his manager, Terri Robson:

"The great tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, died today at 5:00 a.m. at his home in Modena, (Italy) the city of his birth. At his side were his wife, Nicoletta; his daughters, Lorenza, Cristina, Giuliana and Alice; his sister, Gabriela; his nephews and close relatives and friends.
The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness. His last public performance, singing Nessun Dorma, was at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, in February 2006."

After trying to absorb this sad news over coffee this morning, I opened my email and found this from a friend in New York: "I heard the news and wept. And if you think that I'm crazy, wait'll you see Italy's reaction! If the Italian president were killed, not an espresso machine would burp. But an opera singer -- and Pavarotti, yet? The sun won't dare show its face this day, and Italians will cry until La Scala itself is bathed in tears."

I'm still looking and trying not to give up hope, but it's not looking good at this point. Thanks for sending the vibes and for thinking of us. I've noticed a nasty trend during the past few days in that the bigger male cats who come into the yard for apparently no reason other than to jump on the HAC, the younger cat, are frequently in my yard, along with the smaller dogs.

I sent my new bed back, it was so full of toxic fumes that we were all getting woozy. I did a lot of research, of course AFTER I bought it. Richfield Coliseum (basketball arena) near Cleveland. Summer. 90+ degrees. Decent, but not "prestige" seats, so we were dressed for the climate, knowing Luciano would not perform in a venue with air-conditioning.

Pre and post, it was interesting to see the big-$ patrons in their formal wear sweating like pigs (do pigs sweat?) and soaking their designer duds while we, while not exactly comfy, chatted about the performance. Turned out the pricey seats complained they didn't hear any natural sound - that LP was miked, and those of us in the lesser seats heard a better performance than they did.

(sigh, for what it's worth. His voice was truly a gift from God, and I'm an atheist.)
