Just watched local news reports on Mexican trucking
San Diego,

The television news coverage tonight focused on safety. Are these trucks going to be safe.

While that is a valid issue, why is an equally valid issue NOT covered.
That is the issue of trucking jobs being displaced.

Allowing Mexican trucks past the 20 mile limit will mean less work for truckers in the USA.
Why in the hell wasn't that even discussed on any of the news shows?

5. Friends of Bush in high places shot them down.
The loss of jobs and the loss of production is what has destroyed America.

I'm thinking the filing was flawed. Hope they sharpen their pencil and find another means to stop it

3. 200 Mexican trucking companies came in this week and now are
operating in the United States using Mexican drivers. George Bush says congress shouldn't discriminate against Mexican truck drivers..

8. Are we to believe that these Mexican Truckers

are doing the Job that Amurkin Truckers won't do?

These assholes want to build a wall to keep poor Mexicans out, but want to let their trucks in to weaken and financially cripple Americans at the same time?

I have two words for what should be done to BushCo and the CorpoFascists that can't be used here.

10. No. This is to bust the port unions
The plan eventually is to connect American highways with Mexican ports, so as to bypass the ones on the west coast, which are heavily unionized. So in a sense it is about losing American but more than just the trucking jobs.

17. Hell, they knocked down trade tariffs...
...that protected American jobs...why not go after our ports now.
As our bought off politicians sell their souls out and give our country away to the trans-national corporations who couldn't care less about Nationalism or borders.

This is what Thomas Friedman's "flat earth" economy is handing us.
The "New World Order".
Globalization is dragging our country's standard of living down, down, down.....

7. If it was discussed on news shows, there would have been a bigger protest
and corporate interests wouldn't have gotten their way so easily.

Since almost no one knew, the only ones fighting this were the American truckers themselves.

9. It's been discussed.
And discussed.

And discussed.

There's only so much to be said for unhitching trailors and offloading goods from Mexican trucks and hitching them up or loading them onto American trucks. And yet I think I can clearly recall three 'gantlets' of news reporting on the jobs issue. Mostly they've focused on the safety issue, however.

The issue dates back over a decade. It's a NAFTA issue that was supposed to have been implemented in '95. The jobs issue was discussed, presumably, by Clinton, along with all the other job issues in NAFTA.

11. This should be the issue that Dems use to bring Republicans to our side.
We will win huge numbers of votes with this. I can hardly think of anything else that highlights the hypocrisy of this administration like this issue.

I guarantee these Mexican truckers are not citizens. So they make a huge issue of building a wall, and then they let these guys just roll on in.

After talking with the highway patrol yesterday, I was assured that these trucks will be inspected at the border. Who knows? Will they? But I see this as a big political cash cow for us.

It's just a hunch.

13. SAFETY was focused on because that is the BIG issue to mid-America
But.... safety is a HUGE issue. These mega trucks are traveling on our highways w/o the safety inspections (of the vehicle and/or driver) that are required to drive a 'weapon of mass destruction' in this country.

The teamsters have my full support .... in whatever actions they take (barring homicide).

19. A trucker called into Randi's show a few days ago
The company that he used to work for would sell their broken down trucks to Mexico. When he went down there about 10 years later, they were still using the same trucks. Big safety concerns.

20. Well, let's see. All *I* hear about "safety" is that Mexican truck drivers
are driving rickety, wild-ass vehicles, canNOT read the simplest traffic signs, speak no English, and are not subject to the STRINGENT standards of the U.S.

So, to me, that's ONE paranoia.

And now, there are the unions declaiming on the subject of U.S. jobs being lost. To ME, that's another ringy-dingy paranoia.

What's wrong with trade, commerce, changing jobs with changing circumstances?

Be prepared for DAILY "news" stories about Mexican truck drivers CRASHING accidents up and down the entire U.S. Just as HANNITY and O'LOOFAH feature just-about-daily items about ONE "illegal alien" committing horrific crimes. As opposed to the 12 million who don't.

22. You have those republican talking points down.
For your fucking information, NAFTA is NOT free trade. GATT is NOT free trade. CAFTA is NOT free trade. They are all outsourcing and investment scams designed to make billions for repuke CEOs and investors. American truckers will lose their jobs as they are replaced by Mexican truckers making 80% less. Bush's corporate cronies will pocket tons of free money. The race to the bottom will continue. You will continue to support this insanity until your job is gone.

23. I guess you are not paying attn. to the story.....
The Mexican trucks are certified IN MEXICO - their pollution standards are FAR below ours.
The Mexican truckers are perfectly able to drive in Mexico, but unaccustomed to our RIGID standards.
The Mexican truckers will be at risk of life and limb for coming here. Americans are PISSED (for god reasons, but these truckers have NO IDEA how mad many are).

PS - driving from N CA to NM 3-4 times a year, I have no interest in dealing w/ 'WMD's' w/o a REALLY GOOD GRASP on how we drive out here.

standards that are supposed to go into effect in a few years...if those new regulations haven't been trashed...
