Let's talk about racism. And the criminal injustice system.

32 years ago a 17 year old black kid from Louisiana was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. The sentence was commuted to life in prison and there he waits. He will be 50 soon and is still waiting for justice. The trial was a sham. Amnesty International has declared him a political prisoner. Gary Tyler deserves a full pardon and a chance to live his life. So much was taken from him, give him back the rest of his life.

I didn't know about this case, but reading the details made my blood boil.

Trying to do as much as I can. I was stunned to hear about his case. In 1976 there was a big push to help Gary but then nothing happened and people went back to their regularly scheduled program. And there he sits. Hubby has brought attention to him via the website and we are telling as many people as we can. Thank you for caring!

Is the concept of Pennance obsolete? I hope we can engage in a little Democratic Party pennance for what "we" did to Gary Tyler.

Its the natural result of criminalizing civil disobedience as they have done.

We squander our greatness to our discredit. This is one way to help fix what's wrong. How many other Gary Tylers are stuck in cages?

And, of course, this gives me another opportunity to kick.

... they all get explained away as "benefit of the doubt", or "another theoretically possible explanation", or "reverse racism", or "oversensitivity", or whatever the (invariably) white apologist feels like saying at the moment (knowing that she/he has the power of numbers on her/his side).

You may wish to consider other places, that believe in the ACTUAL existence of racism, for your efforts.

Sometimes it is really easy to not see how f*ed up this country still is...

I've traveled, gone to college, got married, raised two kids, been out to dinner, weeded my garden, snuggled my kitties, and he has never had the chance to do any of these things. I can only think about how great it will be when we get him out. If I focus on the injustice I feel beaten down and I despair. Despair doesn't fix things so we have to stay positive, right! :hug:

Whining? He has spent 32 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. AMnesty International is made up of all kinds of humans. Some of them are caucasian I am sure. :eyes:

I never realized how bad it was, till i went to prison, and was enmeshed in the justice system. There is no way that blacks who were predominate at the time committed 90% of the crime in my state. Yet when i went thats what i found. 85-90% black with just a few exceptions. On the white side though, of those locked up about 95% came from poor families. So by the prisons own count 98-99% of prison worthy crime was committed by mostly poor blacks and whites. Even in superior court the black D.A. gave his own color more time than whites.


Good example. My friend T-Bone gets caught with 1/4gm coke and get 5yrs. My other boy Brick gets caught with some loose B.C. powders (crushed aspirin basically) and get charged for possession of a counterfeit substance? And then had to serve 1yr :wow:
On the other end of the spectrum. A well known car dealer and lawyer get busted importing large amounts of coke in the cars dude received. These guys got off with a large donation to the county, I.E. car lot guy donates a bunch of cars. other punishment was probation and 52 weekends in jail :grr: What wrong with that picture?

Such things tarnished and view, or respect i ever had or will have for law enforcement and the justice system.

It's more about socio-economics, but the "scary black man" phenomenon is also rampant throughout the criminal justice system.
