Hagel to announce he's not running on Monday?
From Politico:

Hagel to announce his future plans next Monday

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), who is up for re-election next year, will be making an announcement on his political future Monday morning at 11:00 EST in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hagel hasn't announced what his decision will be, but he has hinted recently that he may be ready to step down. Washington Post columnist David Broder, after interviewing Hagel last week, wrote that "my guess is that he will say that 12 years of battling the institutional lethargy of Capitol Hill will be enough."

Hagel has been one of the president’s harshest GOP critics on the Iraq war. He has been mentioned as an independent candidate for president because of his outspoken differences with his party over foreign policy.

<snip>.

Former Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.) has said he would likely run if Hagel retires. Kerrey, now president of the New School, remains a popular figure in Nebraska. He served in the Senate from 1989-2001, and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1992. His entry would make the Senate race in Nebraska one of the marquee matchups heading into 2008, giving Democrats a newfound opportunity to add to their majority.

Repukes must be freaking as the list of vulnerable repuke Senate seats grows.

1. I can't imagine him announcing that he will run again. He's pretty
young though--wonder what he will do with the rest of his life?

2. Vanity, thy name is Chuck.
Is he planning on having future announcements so we all may know what he plans for dinner..or what new car he may or not get?

4. That press conference (watched it here on TV) never sat well with me--
it was clear that something stopped him at the last minute from running for President--he even had campaign appearances lined up that week. A threat or blackmail of some kind? I felt bad for him--he looked a little flummoxed. I always wondered what the story was behind that.

5. Agree
I did not know he had campaign appearances planned, but the whole thing seemed so out of character it left one wondering what the hell is really going on.

3. Hagel and John Warner will hammer Bushco on the war...
they have both come to the conclusion that Bush is nuts and there's nothing to be gained by continuing to work with him. I think these two gentlemen do have some integrity and genuinely care about our troops.
