Evolution Sunday: Happy Darwin Day
The calendar boasts plenty of religious holidays, but how many scientific holidays can you name? One of the red-letter days is coming up on Monday, when more than 850 events around the globe will mark Darwin Day, the 198th anniversary of the evolutionary theorist's birth. You can hear about Charles Darwin and the revolution he sparked from hundreds of church pulpits this weekend, as part of a program called Evolution Sunday.

From The Horses Mouth....

On 11 February 2007 hundreds of congregations from all portions of the country and a host of denominations will come together to discuss the compatibility of religion and science. For far too long, strident voices, in the name of Christianity, have been claiming that people must choose between religion and modern science. More than 10,000 Christian clergy have already signed The Clergy Letter demonstrating that this is a false dichotomy. Now, on the 198th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, many of these leaders will bring this message to their congregations through sermons and/or discussion groups. Together, participating religious leaders will be making the statement that religion and science are not adversaries. And, together, they will be elevating the quality of the national debate on this topic.

2. not mutually exclusive
Christianity and Evolution seem to be mutually exclusive however spiritually and evolution are not. Remember Christians hold that the Earth is only around 5000 years old.

4. keep in mind Darwin was a Christian as well
And he came from a very prominent and well respected family that produced many priests. He was going to go into the priesthood if his days as a doctor failed--thank goodness he found biology :)

5. Darwin was an agnostic.

"I have never been an atheist in the sense if denying the existence of a God. I think that generally (& more & more so as I grow older), but not always, that an agnostic would be the most correct description of my state of mind".

Letter to the Rev. J. Fordyce, July 7, 1879

He did NOT believe in revealed religion and was outspoken about it.

7. oh I know--what I mean is that Darwin clearly is not...
...the stereotype of anti-science fundamentalists. Many people think that evolution is the "religion" of atheists.

6. In Darwin's own words....
"Science and Christ have nothing to do with each other. I do not believe that any revelation has ever been made."

3. Thanks for the link regarding the group that strives for
compatibility of religion and science.

It's always been compatible in my house because my parents raised me to believe that the Bible was a guide, a list of parables, and wasn't to be taken literally, but to use the words figuratively. For example, I was taught that the world is millions of years old, but that we have no idea how long God's seven days are - are they each a million years? Who knows? We can't know the ways of God.

Why do fundies find that so hard to do?
