The Washington Post, Ny Times, and the LA Times have all had stories today or yesterday about the "alternative" intelligence of Doug Feith, who worked for Dick Cheney and George W Bush. At one time, Dick Cheney requested Feith give "intelligence" to the Weekly Standard, a right-wing news magazine, just so he, Cheney, could use them as a source for his claims.
This White House, along with Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz, decided they would use their own intelligence, rather than relying on the professionals at the CIA or the NSC. Their main source was probably the now disowned Chalabi, who was passing the lies to everyone from Dick Cheney to Judith Miller of the NY Times, it appears.
Why didn't they use the "intelligence" that was available to them? Because it did not suit their needs. They needed "intelligence" that said Iraq had "yellow cake" and were working on a nuclear program that was a threat to us. Cheney, Bush, and Condi Rice all mentioned the "mushroom cloud" at one time or another. It was all a lie.
They needed "intelligence" that said Iraq had WMDs. As Bush worked feverishly to build up an invasion force in Kuwait and the Persian Gulf, the weapons inspectors in Iraq were finding nothing. After the fact, they said all the intelligence agencies around the world "believed" Saddam had WMDs. In fact, not even the intelligence agencies of our own government believed that. It was all a lie.
And they spread the word that Iraqi intelligence had met with one of the 9/11 hi-jackers. Even after they were told there was no evidence, they continued to spread the story, especially Cheney. Once again, they lied.
Now, almost 4 years later, and almost 3100 American deaths later, we find ourselves discredited around the world and our country stuck in a quagmire in Baghdad. Those that lied us into the war are now accusing those that advised against the war of not "having a plan". As if the critics are obligated to come up with a "plan" or they have no right to criticize the mess this White House got us into.
The sad truth is that Bush and Cheney ignored reliable intelligence and created their own. In the process, they lied to the American people. They conspired to hide the truth about their dirty deeds. Now, we have a Congress that scratches their heads and their asses, wondering if there was anything illegal that happened? Perhaps it would be an easier task for them if they could find anything about this conspiracy that is "legal".
