911 hung up on me last night!
Edited on Tue Sep-11-07 12:26 PM by VLC
I was at a bus stop downtown on a block with only one store left open. The shop owner was being threatened by a group of guys. At first I couldn't tell who was on which "side" so I watched for a few minutes. Apparently a dude with cornrows had asked Shopkeeper for a cigarette and Shopkeeper said no and Cornrow did not like his attitude. He kept telling him to come out of the store away from the cameras so he could "bring it". Then Cornrow was demanding to know what time Shopkeeper got off so they could "settle it".

I called 911 and told them what block I was on and what was going on. The woman asked me what color the guys were and I told her I didn't know - I was trying to keep as far away as possible and not stare at them, plus it was night, and Cornrow was not Caucasian or African_American and didn't look Hispanic either. She did not like "I don't know." After I told her it was the only store open (i.e. lit up at night) on a very short block and it was right in front of the bus stop, she wanted to know what kind of store it was.

While I'm trying to convey the urgency to her, bottles start breaking and people are running around all over the street and glass is flying everywhere. Cornrow and Shopkeeper ran around the corner and Shopkeeper came back with blood all over his chin and out of anger smashed a bottle on the ground which cut my leg (not a bad cut).

While this is going on, a police car drives down the side street but doesn't look over, so I tell the operator there's a car right there, please get someone over quick, and she says sarcastically, "So the police drove by and didn't see it?" I was too flustered to explain the cop was on a side street.

So the 911 operator is still asking questions and says, "The police have to know what to look for!" And I yelled at her, "There are guys running around the street throwing bottles at each other! It's impossible to miss!" And she hung up on me.

1. What kind of neighborhood was it?
I wouldn't be surprised if the income level of the neighborhood in question determines the urgency the operators treat the calls with.

8. Had the same kind of thing happen when I was a clerk.
A customer came in to my VERY busy downtown Las Vegas store saying there was a man passed out against the building. I called 911 and waited on hold while tending to my line of customers. Finally an operator came on and after explaining that I was the cashier stuck inside the store and that my facts were coming from concerned customers, she still wanted to know:

*The person's exact description including height and weight (while passed out against a wall)
*Exact location including the direction the wall faced (and the store was less than 30' to a side)
*Was he breathing? Was he able to answer questions?

After this went on for over 5 minutes I finally took the phone away from my ear and said, loudly, to the crowd of customers who were held up by my phone call, "well isn't this just like Las Vegas' finest? Someone could be dying and they want to know against which wall of a small building!"

I put the phone back to my ear to hear the dispatch yelling at me that she'd send someone and then she hung up on me.

As for you I'm glad you didn't get hurt! You really took your safety into your own hands even getting involved in an incident like that. It's a damn shame.

9. I can understand they want as many details as possible
and it's for the officers' safety too or to warn the ambulance what they're gonna find so they can prepare, but sometimes it's out of control.

Unless there were 20 people passed out against a wall, you'd think they could find the guy!

10. I have gotten to the point that
when I call 911 because of something going on in the neighborhood (there is always plenty going on here), I always tell them I think I saw a gun, am not positive but I thought it was a gun, that ALWAYS gets them moving a little faster.

12. Just pay your taxes and STFU.

:sarcasm:

That's all they really expect out of you. It is expecting too much to have them work for their paycheck.

13. How about "attractive pregnant white woman has disappeared"?
You'd have the cops, Fox News, Rita Cosby, Nancy Grace and everyone else at the front of the store in 45 seconds.
