Glenn Greenwald says:

Kevin Drum voices what seems to be the prevailing sentiment regarding Rudy Giuliani: "I don't think Giuliani has the faintest chance of winning a presidential contest in 2008, which is the reason I insisted a few days ago that the Republican field was so poor this cycle." I think the opposite is true -- Giuliani is by far the most formidable, and most dangerous, Republican candidate, and the notion that he cannot win the Republican nomination is grounded in several myths.

...

for the bulk of religious conservatives, foreign policy issues are not distinct from religious and moral issues. Our Middle East foreign policy is a critical, really the predominant, item on their moral and religious agenda. Among the Christian right, aggressive, war-seeking policies in the Middle East -- specifically against Muslim religiosity and Israel's enemies -- are embraced on moral and theological grounds far more than on geopolitical grounds.

I disagree but its bugging me enough to see what others think. Could the GOP elect a pro-abortion candidate? could he get through the primaries even?

1. My guess is that Sam Brownback has already devised a formula to
take Rudy out on this issue.

Brownback is in the race to deliver America to Jesus, and he isn't going to let a non-Conservative abortionist from liberal New York to stop him.

I think fundie voters who are motivated enough to participate in Iowa and New Hampshire -- those early caucus/primary states -- will vote their hearts (Brownback) first, and that enough of them will do so to sink Rudy's ship.

2. Like Digby and others point out, party affiliation is a *tribal* phenomenon...

... regardless of what individuals say.

EDIT: Being a "tribal phenomenon" means, among other things, that willingness to support the leader of their tribe is substantially insensitive to the vagaries of what views that leader might hold. One supports him (it's always a him, for republicans) simply because he is the leader.

3. That depends upon whether you think Racists will also flock
to RG, because his get-tough on street people background, suggests an anti-immigrant, pro-White bias.

4. The only way he could possibly win is if the pro life vote got split
and I don't think that will happen. It would be one thing if he were the only Republican who believed in the middle east policy espoused by the Religious Right, but he isn't. If he did get the nomination and no pro life splinter candidate ran we would be in big trouble.

5. Hagel hasn't announced whether he'll run yet -- or if he does whether
as a Republican or an Independent -- but if he does announce as a Republican, the so-called moderate GOP primary vote will become a hotly contested demographic between Rudy and Chuck.

If Iraq is no better or even worse, Chuck gets the lion's share of that vote, with either Huckabee or Brownback chopping away at Rudy's conservative vote, such as it might be, leaving Rudy well back in the pack.

I say he's out after New Hampshire, and good riddance.
