Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 08:13 PM by Redstone
a stuffy nose and need to buy a box of pseudoephedrine tablets, so I don't snore Mrs R out of the bed tonight.

I have to remember to bring my driver's license to to the drugstore so they can scan it into the Big Database of People With Stuffy Noses...you know what a threat THEY are to the security of our beloved Vaterland...oops, Homeland.

45. Um, but he's right.
The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act, which authorizes this has nothing to do with DHS. DEA is a component of the Justice Department, not Homeland.

46. i was referring to the reauthorization
http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/patriotact/

The Patriot Act Reauthorization Combats Methamphetamine Abuse

The Patriot Act Reauthorization Includes The Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act Of 2005. This bill introduces commonsense safeguards that will make many ingredients used in methamphetamine manufacturing more difficult to obtain in bulk and easier for law enforcement to track. For example, the bill places limits on large-scale purchases of over-the-counter drugs that are used to manufacture methamphetamines- and requires stores to keep these ingredients behind the counter or in locked display cases. It increases penalties for smuggling and selling methamphetamines.

48. I am aware of that. Still has nothing to do with DHS
The meth act's inclusion in the Patriot Act Reauth bill doesn't make it related to DHS. The poster was correct that the law requiring customers to show ID and sign the log to purchase pseudoephedrine has nothing to do with the Department of Homeland Security.

The major beneficiary of the reauth bill is Justice, not Homeland. DHS would only care about the OP's Sudafed if it was smuggled into the country, and even in that case DEA would probably take the case away from ICE.

Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 08:06 PM by saddlesore
I had just gotten my Texas drivers license. They confiscate your old one. Won't let you get the Texas one without surrendering the old state.

Needless to say a couple days later I needed pseudoephedrine (hey, it works...) and all I had was the piece of shit paper they gave me as temporary. No go. Friggin Pharmacist would not even take my Passport as ID.

Was I mad? No. Not her fault and I never yell at people on drugs (kool-aid)...

Peace.

12. so nothing has changed since 1986
Edited on Fri Sep-14-07 08:33 PM by musette_sf
i moved to TX from LA. needed to open a bank account as i had banked with a local bank in LA with no out of state branches and no reciprocal agreements with any other banks. wouldn't open account w/o TDL. went to DPS. they took my LA license and gave me the piece of paper. went back to bank. wouldn't open account because i had no photo TDL, just a piece of paper. went home, got passport. after about a half-hour of argument as to why a passport proved my identity better than a TDL, finally got bank account opened by manager who was likely just sick and tired of me.

and i too need pseudoephedrine for my allergies. nothing else works. so i feel your pain. i have to say that if i were you i'd be all over the pharmacist and the pharmacy manager until they took my passport as ID. after all, it's an idiotic FEDERAL law (the glorious Patriot Act) that forces this absurd policy on the drugstores. therefore your FEDERAL ID had better be enough.

24. Nothing changed. Even worse.
I did call the manager. They called some other store. Probably some regional manager.

They told me that since my passport was the older non-holo type that they could not do it.

I was sick. No fuel to fight. I left and bought a dozen limes. Zested them and made tea. Zest went in the green tea. Ate the fruit. Did that for two days...it helped.

Peace.

took out one book about England, one about the Gold Rush, and a cookbook featuring Italian food.

Now all they have to do is to connect the dots, and I'm toast. I may as well go turn myself in.

47. You are, in fact, toast...
Books about England are now on the watch list because Brits refuse to privatize their health care system, despite 17 straight years of noble conservative attempts to convince them to dump that monolithic socialist mess and go with the US model instead. See Canada, France, Germany and Scandinavian countries for further information.

The gold rush was a well-known magnet for foreign undesirables who infested California and tried to steal precious metals right out from under good, hard-working native Americans -- native being Northern Europeans in this case. This invasion is seen as the inspiration for all the illegals now overrunning this great land of ours and stealing precious sidewalk space from good, hard-working Americans who are on the streets because illegals have taken up all the beds at the shelters.

And finally, Sacco and Vanzetti were Italians, as were the Red Brigades and Titian. What else could you possibly want to know about Italy and its relationship to the international terrorist/anarchist/oil-painting conspiracy?

Frankly, the evidence is overwhelming. You're an enemy of the US health care system, which is completely at odds with official doctrine; you're studying issues related to illegal immigration, which isn't necessarily too bad, but when combined with your desire to cook the kinds of dishes known to have been eaten by terrorist organizations and artists, in complete disregard for the approved meal of a Big Mac with fries and a shake favored by mainstream Americans...

All this puts you in a very bad light. Nothing that a few years of political reeducation at Gitmo won't fix, but I'm afraid you're off to the camps for the time being.

Be well, praise JeeeeZuzzzz and revere Overlord Cheney as if your life depended on it.

It was not a library. It was Amazon. Probably stupid, but I refuse to live in fear. I also ordered life sized replicas of the Bill of Rights, Constitution, and Flags of the Union from a store in Virginia.

I figure if you are going to do something, do it right.

Peace.

I just did it because I wanted to read them and own the copy. I like the feel of a real book.

The replicas hang in hallway. I do not think it is a big risk. Not like some of the real activist here on DU who risk it daily in the flesh on the streets. They are the ones who deserve the salutes.

The library idea is audacious though and I will add it to my repertoire...;-)

Thanks for the kind words though...I am humbled.

i'm in no way endorsing use of this crap drug that has destroyed the life of someone close to me. but this "solution" sure as sh!t isn't working.

My 'hood is in a boring area east of the tunnel, so no. What has increased is theft from cars parked on the street and in driveways (tweakers looking for easy resale items.)

14. Many of us have simply quit buying pseudoephedrine for this reason.
We have no desire to make crystal meth, we simply can no longer tolerate standing in the prescription line and crawling through broken glass for it. I found an old Tylenol sinus in my desk the other day when I was searching for some relief from my congestion from allergies. It was great to have some solid relief.

I have no doubt that the pharmacists are as upset as we are over this. Their work load skyrocketed with that dictum. I wonder if meth is no longer a problem no that the average consumer has been force into this inconvenience?

41. All you stuffy nosers- try this instead: Osha Root.
A VERY pungent root. Tastes like condensed celery root.

http://www.herbalgram.org/youngliving/herbalgram/articleview.asp?a=2669

But it will clear and tone (help dry) your sinuses, especially if they are producing mucous.

I buy it in bulk and tincture it. (which uses less plant material than making tea or chewing it and so helps with the potential sustainability issues)

And remember, just because it is herbal does not make it completely safe. More is not necessarily better; as one of my students learned after taking 4x the standard dose ("to make it work better"). When the ringing in his ears stopped and the flashing lights cleared from his vision, he figured he might want to stick with the standard 5-10 drops of tinture.

Questions, feel free to PM. I don't give medical advice. I only tell people what has worked for me and the people I know. Completely unscientific and anectdotal. (just to get that out of the way)

Yeah, I've got sinus problems, and the replacement for pseudophedrine in over the counter meds sucks, so I feel you pain. The idea that people who make meth would go to a drug store and buy the ingredients (instead of stealing them or buying them off a truck somewhere) is just so fucking stupid and typical.
