Bush did the right thing (yes, I know, I am surprised, too-QE)
By executive order, President Bush did this week what Congress failed to do last month. The White House granted an 18-month extension to Liberian immigrants who are living in the United States under temporary status. That means nearly 4,000 Liberians across the nation ( 1,000 in Minnesota) won't be deported by Oct. 1, giving them the right to stay and federal lawmakers another year and a half to solve their dilemma.
Because of civil war in their country, many have been living in the United States for nearly two decades. Most have established lives and families and become contributing workers and taxpayers. The entire Minnesota congressional delegation supported the Liberians' bid to stay, sharing the view that it is unreasonable to uproot them. And though the war is over, Liberia still struggles to rebuild and can't absorb thousands of returned refugees.
This administration has provided ample opportunities to question its use of executive privilege. This time, President Bush used executive powers properly. His action bought valuable time to seek a permanent residency solution for a deserving group of immigrants.
