how we he be able to continue his hunt for the real killer of his wife? This whole episode just seems so unfair to him.

He's discovered the murderer wasn't to be found on any the nation's golf courses, or in the oceanside cafes or South Beach night clubs, so he's decided to take the search inside to see if the suspect has already been caught. It's a process of elimination thing.
