Barry Manilow refuses to be on the View with conservative Elisabeth
"TMZ has learned that legendary singer Barry Manilow has pulled out of his scheduled appearance on "The View" tomorrow -- because he strongly disagrees with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck's conservative view! Paging Rosie O'Donnell!

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Barry says, "I strongly disagree with her views. I think she's dangerous and offensive. I will not be on the same stage as her."

Manilow is currently on a press tour promoting the release of his new album, "Greatest Songs of the Seventies."

A network spokesman had no comment."

***Congratulations to Barry for taking a stand! He'll probably be vilified by the right wingers now for dissing their poster girl. After I read that I went to Amazon and ordered his new Cd!***

10. From Barry Manilow's website:
“I wanted to let you know that I will no longer be on The View tomorrow as scheduled. I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out. It’s really too bad because I’ve always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs. The good news is that I will be on a whole slew of other shows promoting the new album so I hope you can catch me on those.”

12. Good for him. Now if others would follow suit and
refuse to be interviewed by the little freep, maybe ABC would start seeing her as the joke and liability she is. If it's clear she's costing them guests - and potential ratings - maybe they'll boot her ass. That would be sweet.

14. Nice. Clearly he set this up or he would have made his request earlier,
before scheduling his appearance.

Way to go Barry!

He's a friend of The Colbert Report though. :)

16. Barry Manilow's "music" has always made me retch. So there's absolutely no chance that I would buy
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 06:21 PM by scarletwoman
one of his CDs to show support.

It IS definitely interesting to hear that he's anti-rightwingnut.

On the other hand, I don't find it particularily admirable to refuse to go on the show just because Ms. Hasselbeck would be in on his appearance. It would have been much more helpful to the country at large, imho, for him to have shown up ready to rip her idiotic arguments to shreds. Had he any true courage of his stated convictions, he would not have balked at being faced with such an easily defeated opponent as the airheaded Ms. Hasselbeck -- if for no other reason than for the good of our country.

As it is, he's made this all about him, and his apparently delicate sensibilities. No wonder "The Left" is so readily scorned and mocked.

Therefore, I feel absolutely no guilt in continuing to utterly despise his "music", which has now proven to be an accurate reflection of an intellectually and artistically (using the term loosely) shallow, ego-ridden soul.

What pisses me off is this: if you really truly believe that things are going badly wrong in our country, AND you have an opportunity to appear on a major mainstream media program, how can you NOT take advantage of it -- if you really want to help things to change? What good does it do to refuse to engage the enemy?

17. I respect his decision not to appear
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 06:25 PM by DesertRat
He apparently isn't comfortable to show up under the guise of promoting his new album then challenging Elisabeth for her political views.
Backing out of the show when he was told that she would interview him is his own way of standing up for his beliefs.

I agree with DesertRat. I'm not a fan of his music, but I do think this is a principled stand.

21. You don't watch the show apparently.
Political discussions are never had with guests. They only take place among the hosts at the top of the show.

One can not discuss anything with Elizabeth - she is a loud common ordinary garden variety bully and protected by the producer Bill Geddes. She can not be shut down because she yells louder than everyone else - including Rosie. Bill is a right wing nut and feeds her the lines and takes care of her. If Barry even managed to find a way to say something political his mic would be cut. The View is just as staged as Fox.

I wouldn't call the View a major mainstream media program. It is three or four somewhat rational women and one yelling bitch. That is it.

22. I started watching it when it very first came on, & then off and on over the years since.
Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:11 PM by scarletwoman
I hadn't bothered with it for a long while until Rosie showed up, and then usually just once a week at most. I'm not a regular viewer, but I'm not a stranger to it either.

I've never seen anyone's mike get cut -- has that actually happened? I'm asking because I'm fairly sure I would have seen some massively outraged posts about it on DU. While I may not watch "The View" all that often, I check into DU pretty much everyday. Which is still not to say that I couldn't have missed such a discussion about such an event, but I actually did make it a point to follow "View" threads once Rosie was part of the crew.

I am well aware of what an obnoxious twit Ms. Hasselbeck is. I just don't see why I should respect someone who would pre-emptively let that shallow airhead keep him from making his case, if he felt strongly enough about his principles.

But, hey, good for Mr. Manilow for creating some extra buzz for himself and sending lots of outraged "liberals" to his website -- where he can direct them to all his other appearances where he will be promoting his new album. Suckers.

28. OH MANDY, INDEED!
this is great to hear.

why is it Barry's responsibility to argue with Hasselbeck about the war if it's something he isn't comfortable with. His job is to sing and promote himself - and he gave that up in this instance - because he's against the conservative (overly!) views of Hasselbeck. I commend him. If he's not comfortable in doing more, then so be it.
