Newt: I need $30 million before I can run for President

Announcing as a presidential candidate on Jay Leno's late night TV show — as Republican Fred Thompson did recently — "is just goofy," Newt Gingrich said Thursday.

The former House Speaker from Georgia said he would lean toward starting the race with a nationally televised address — if he decides to run. That decision will come around Nov. 1 and depend upon whether his supporters can get $30 million in pledges for campaign support, Gingrich explained at a breakfast with reporters and political commentators.

"This is not a game show," said Gingrich of the presidential selection process. "This is serious business."

During October, Gingrich said Randy Evans, the chairman of Gingrich Communications, will sound out potential backers to see if the resources are there to "run a serious campaign." He said that it would take at least $30 million and that the pledges would serve as "a proxy to see if there is a large enough base of support" for him to join the crowded Republican field.

"I'm not getting on the phone and calling people," he said.
