WHO confirms 1st cholera case in Baghdad

WHO confirms 1st cholera case in Baghdad

1 hour, 1 minute ago

BAGHDAD - The World Health Organization on Thursday confirmed the first cholera case in Baghdad, raising fears the disease is spreading.

A 25-year-old woman from western Baghdad was found to have cholera after she turned up at the hospital with a severe case of diarrhea, said Dr. Naeema al-Gasseer, the WHO's representative in Iraq.

<...>

Al-Gasseer said health authorities were concerned that the disease could be spread due to the movement of people within Iraq's borders, which have seen hundreds of thousands of displaced people forced to flee their homes because of the violence.

<...>

The latest WHO report, dated Sept. 14, reported a total of 24,532 cases of people with symptoms of cholera such as diarrhea and vomiting in the northern provinces of Sulaimaniyah, Tamim and Irbil.

5. The entire country's health care system has been decimated by the
large numbers of health care professionals fleeing from the country. Not a good situation for battling a cholera epidemic. This is horribly sad.

8. Typhus is actually spread by lice
Although if you don't have water, you're likely to have lice.

9. My point exactly
Without adequate water, hygiene suffers. "Body" lice actually live on people's clothes (head lice are icky but harmless), and with water shortages, laundry takes a back seat to hydration. I should have made the relationship clearer. My bad.
