6. the ONLY thing the fascists can do is ATTACK the MESSENGER, in an effort to obscure the message.
and it ALWAYS works, until the elections last year. and we see how much effect that had.

the reason it always works is that the M$M does the heavy lifting. the average 'news' consumer thinks that Ratheris crazy, that the letter, if they remember anything about the details, was a forgery, and that's IT.

nothing else about what really happened WRT Bush being AWOL.

and that's all they care about, all that matters

why do you think rove sent all those clerks to the NARA, to find any negative records about bush, cheney and the republican and remove them. We'll never find them, unless they surface in some other medium they don't know about.

43. Weren't Harriet Miers and Dan Bartlett supposedly involved in the TANG cover-up?
Bush sure is loyal to people who lie and cheat for him isn't he? Here's some info:

Moreover, Newsweek reported on July 9, 2000 that the Bush campaign "launched a secretive research operation designed to scour all records relating to his Vietnam-era service" during preparation for Bush's 1998 re-election campaign. They paid "hard-nosed Dallas lawyer named Harriet Miers" $19,000 to review the records. According to Newsweek, one result of her work was to deflect charges that former Texas House Speaker Ben Barnes helped Bush get into the Texas Air National Guard despite low qualifications and a long waiting list. Barnes was later forced to testify under oath that he helped Bush.

The same Newsweek article also discusses the absence of evidence that Bush fulfilled his orders to report for duty in Alabama in the fall of 1972. According to the article, "Dan Bartlett conceded that the records 'were either lost or misplaced... we are not sure.'" If Burkett's charges are true, Bartlett may have had a hand in losing or misplacing these records.

Burkett stops short of directly accusing Bartlett of "doctoring" Bush's records. Instead, Burkett faults the Bush campaign and senior officials of the Texas National Guard for incompetence in failing to release two key documents that would answer questions about Bush's absence from duty - but not his grounding from flight.

7. Does he mention
that this salient fact, the story itself being true, was dropped without a peep. This itself is indicative of an industry wide suppression and redirection of the obvious that happens every day, producing awesome journalistic atrocities such as this shooting of the messenger and betrayal. This sort of treatment is what everyone else receives at the media's hands every single day. Forced to eat one of their own makes them more noxious, but it is ironically consistent and shows the destructive character of American journalism in corporate hands. Snake devouring its own tale.

31. You are so right. It's good to see this was not forgotten.
"Buckhead", that Atlanta lawyer and RW blogger who first spouted off that they were "forgeries" exposed his own ignorance by being unable to distinguish Times New Roman from Palatino. He was desperately throwing the spaghetti at the wall.

Yes, IBM had at least two typewriters at the time that had proportional spacing and optional superscript "TH"s.

A researcher in Utah pointed out that the most commonly used letters (e's and t's) showed signs of wear consistent with frequent use, along with baseline shift anomalies consistent with...drum roll...a vintage typewriter.

Chain of custody is a different question, and the documents could have been tampered with; but the argument that they were created in Microsoft Word is bullshit.

the ones feed to Rather were almost alike but contained improper word usage inconsistent with the Air Force branch of the military.

Again, someone took the authentic originals, slightly altered them and then feed them to Rather.

He gets to send requests for documents, questions for the defendants to answer, the opportunity to question witnesses under oath in depositions and at trial, the opportunity to conduct scientific testing of evidence by experts, etc.

Via his lawsuit against CBS Dan Rather may get hold of all kinds of documents that would have been secreted had he not filed suit.

THis could get interesting given his background as an investigative journalist.

I read a blog on line back in 2002, maybe even earlier 2000? by a texan, who quoted Bill Burkett's story.........watching the base commander trash Bush's records.......then was made head of the Air National Guard ( nation wide) Must have been 2000, in time to affect te election ( we wish) Yeh it was about the time the MAiner looked up Bushs DUI record in Kennebunk ( they forgot to expunge that one)

Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 09:26 AM by malaise
Al Gore -p.125-126
"The White House also tried to extend its efforts to manipulate the impressions of the American people with a campaign to intimidate the media into presenting a more favorable image of the administration...When the White House became upset with CBS television news, the president engaged in the theatrics of personal intimidation by staging a photo op during his on camera walk from the Oval Office to his waiting limousine, carrying under his arm for the cameras to photograph a copy of a book by a right-wing conservative attacking CBS as biased...Dan Rather, former CBS anchor, said that the post-9/11 atmosphere stifled journalists from asking government officials 'the toughest of the tough questions'. Rather went so far as to compare administration efforts to intimidate the press with necklacing in apartheid South Africa. While acknowledging it as, in his phrase, 'an obscene comparison', he said, 'the fear is that you will be necklaced; you will have a flaming tire of lack of patriotism put around you neck'."

"Buckhead" had his detailed analysis of why the CBS's documents were forgeries posted on the internet 30 minutes after the segment ran on 60 Minutes. No way in hell did he sit in front of his TV with a magnifying glass examining them and comparing the font to what was in use at the time.
