Broadband speeds under scrutiny
Broadband speeds under scrutiny

Broadband speeds in the UK are much slower than advertised by internet service providers, a study by Computeractive magazine has found.

Some 3,000 readers took part in speed tests and 62% found they routinely got less than half of the top speed advertised by their provider.

It is the latest in a series of questions over the way net firms advertise broadband services.

Regulator Ofcom said it was aware of the issue and was "investigating".

I can tell you, the same problem exists in the United States. I recently "upgraded" to a higher speed DSL with Qwest, and now have slower download speeds than I did before.

1. The exceedingly small print
always says real speed may be slower. But less than half of advertised speed is wrong. My DSL from ATT is "maximum speed of 3mbps" I don't think I've ever hit that but it routinely runs at 2.5mbps-which I'm willing to accept since I know about the technical causes of slower than advertised vs real speed. But if they were selling me 3 and I'm getting less than half that I would be squawking at them every day.

2. I'm in the UK and this report is pretty accurate.
The actual speed is nothing like what's advertised.

4. The ought to have MediaCom
We had a local broadband company and we got really decent speeds. Then MediaCom bought it out and we are always having a mess. They had to come out and rewire our connections, give us new splitters and it still is not half as fast as the local company and we have the top speed next to what businesses use.
