ADM William Fallon: Iran supplying Taliban

U.S. commander: Iran supplying Taliban

U.S. Commander Says Iran Supplying 'Lethal Aid' to Afghan Militants

BRIAN MURPHY
AP News

Sep 21, 2007 12:51 EDT

A top American commander on Friday accused Iran of supplying powerful roadside bombs to militants in Afghanistan and said the U.S. would "act decisively" if the cross-border flow continues.

Heavy battles in the violence-plagued south, meanwhile, killed 75 Taliban and at least six civilians, and a suicide car bomb in the capital killed a French soldier and an Afghan bystander.

Adm. William Fallon, the head of U.S. Central Command, said Iran's Revolutionary Guard is supplying roadside bomb parts for the type of sophisticated and deadly bombs found in Iraq known as explosively formed penetrators.

"The Iranians are clearly supplying some amount of lethal aid," Fallon told The Associated Press during a trip to Afghanistan. "There is no doubt ... that agents from Iran are involved in aiding the insurgency."

13. I am at the point where I trust no one. Right now the attention is on Iran, and how better
to drum up a war against Iran then with someone who appears to be a critic of Patraeus, convincing those opposed to the Iraq war to support a pending one with Iran.

I hate how cynical I've become.

3. Makes no sense
The Taliban and Iran do not and -never did- get along. Why would Iran be funding them?

16. Geez, really?
You mean you think that the Iranians would be just a teensy bit upset with the Taliban for kidnapping some of their diplomats, cutting their heads off and using the heads as substitute soccer balls? Naw. What's a frat boy prank or two among bosom buddies? Jeebus.

10. precisely.
Iran may or may not be supplying arms to the Taliban, but they're hardly the only ones involved in the arming racket.

12. If the Taliban was still fighting to keep the Russians out, we would
be undercutting Iran simply by giving our stuff to them. There would be a value added thingy or something.

14. Didn't Iran support Afghanistan's Northern Alliance?
Or is Iran the "America" of the middle-east, supplying weapons to everyone?
