One of the greatest movies ever is on tonight
The Great Dictator 1940, by Charles Chaplin is on TCM at 8:00 p.m. eastern standard time. Everything is wonderful about the film, except, if I remember correctly, a woman in the barber shop who speaks with a very New York accent. His dance with the globe is unforgettable.

1. I'd be there with you, but PBS is showing "Young Frankenstein" at the same time.
(And I'm terribly sorry, but Buster Keaton was way funnier than Chaplin.)

9. That's a great scene too!
No offense to anyone intended, but back when Homosexuals were more universally hated than they are now, the body-language in that scene seems a caricature of that object of hate.

11. At the same time: Saving Private Ryan and Psycho. I'm surprised A Clockwork Orange isn't on too.
And Dr. Zigavo (sp?) and 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World as long as we're at it.

19. Welcome Danger with Harold Lloyd in 20 minutes kick.
TCM. I loved him most in the movie where he hung off the hand of that clock. He did most of these dangerous scenes himself, not going for a stunt double. Amazing fella.

20. Yeah, love him too, as well as Keaton
Just a little trivia. There is/was a place in Los Angeles where a lot of these "dangerous" scenes were filmed. Depending on the angle, it would seem that the actor was really far above the street, when in actual fact he/she was only a few feet from the top of a building. I don't know if this famous clock scene was shot there or not, I can't remember. I know I was watching a program on either Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton and they showed this area. I don't know if this area still exists or not. Boy, I'm no help, I know.

22. That is very true. Some scenes were not as dangerous
as they looked. But, the clock scene was 12 stories up (according to wiki)
I adore these golden oldie movies.

23. I just saw "Safety Last" last month, and I was screaming.
Fantastic sequence. The collection I was watching talked about how they filmed this.

There were three locations on top of different buildings. Lloyd is actually on the opposite side of the street as the buildings we see in that picture. The back of the set is facing the street, but because of the angle, it appears he's on the other side.

There were three floors built for each set, so from the clock, Lloyd is still hanging twenty feet above the roof of the building he's on, no wire. And he still had another floor to climb there! There were mattresses on the roof, though.

However, the set is built as far to the side of the building as possible, so where Lloyd is right now, to his right, is a drop all the way down to the ground. The man was insane, and you will know what I mean if you see some of the other stuff he does. Oh, those wicked pigeons.

But what a sequence.
