10th-grade student asks Bush why he won't negotiate directly with Iranian leaders

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-na-bush4oct04,0,7081662.story?coll=la-home-center

<snip>

When a 10th-grade student asked him why he would not negotiate directly with Iranian leaders, Bush said, "For diplomacy to work, the other side needs as much or more from you as you need from them."

Bush says he will not negotiate with Iran until it suspends what the United States maintains is a program to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says the program is aimed at civilian nuclear power development. He said it was Ahmadinejad's choice, not his, about the prospects for negotiations.

1. Kid's follow-up question should have been "Then why did you talk to North Korea?"

5. Furthermore, why do we have diplomacy with ANY nation that is
well-off, like for instance the European nations??? I don't see as how they need much from us......

What do you expect from someone who wouldn't recognize true diplomacy if it came up and bit him in the ass?

7. Because
he loses more when he gets hammered by a third grader. He has a tougher time talking down to a small child who is at par with his reality base. Easier to fob off a mouthy adolescent with a traditional adult non sequitur. No automatic devastating comparison.

Good for the kid. It must be intimidating to ask a question you know the POTUS doesn't want to hear.
