What Was The Maximum Income For People To Qualify For SChip?
i heard bush on the radio say congress wanted to provide schip to families with $83,000 a year income and "that's not poor"

was the max really for $83,000 income or less?

1. Supposedly New York proposed 83k (400% of poverty line)
And also supposedly, the vast majority of beneficiaries would've been low income and poor who ideally would already have been enrolled in the program but aren't. At any rate Bush took a hypothetical and turned it into a misrepresentation. Par for the course.

2. It depends on the state
Different states add more money and create programs so families with kids can either get subsidies or buy into a separate state funded program. The new law will mandate 300% of poverty for all states, and provide the funding. The $83,000 figure was for New York, and is 400% of poverty, and was apparently taken out of the bill. It is a step towards universal health coverage, which ought to be seen as a good thing.

3. In order to get above 200% of poverty level, states must request a waiver from the Feds
