DO NOT CALL LIST SET TO EXPIRE
Edited on Fri Oct-05-07 01:36 PM by roguevalley
Do Not Call list about to expire
Restrictions that keep telemarketers from pestering you at home could end as early as next summer -- unless you register your phone number again.

Liz Pulliam Weston
Humorist Dave Barry got it absolutely right when he called the federal Do Not Call list "the most popular federal concept since the Elvis stamp."

There's no red-state, blue-state divide on the list, which prohibits telemarketers from bothering folks who have registered their phone numbers. Republican or Democrat, Libertarian or Green Party member, everybody detests telemarketers -- except, of course, telemarketers themselves, who were just about the only voices in opposition to the list's creation.

The numbers speak for themselves:

10 million phone numbers were registered within four days of the list's opening on June 27, 2003.

30 million numbers were signed up within 40 days.

63 million were registered in the list's first year.

Currently, 149 million phone numbers are on the

1. Thanks.
I moved since I registered, so I just put my new numbers on the list.

:hi:

2. I'm thinking of just using 2 cans and a string
It's ridiculous that corporations can legally invade our homes, our lives.

We need some kind of new, federal anti-solicitation law that prohibits home invasions.

3. If you start to get irritating calls
Go to the website and verify that your number is still on the list. Last year this happened to me and somehow my numbers had been eliminated from the list. Hmmm--could it be the wonderful list company Bush pals are screwing around with this list? I think so.

4. I am not a telemarketer, and I am in favor of the do not call list
but can we stop trashing telemarketers. Yes they are pesky, but they are only doing their job. In many cases people that work in "call centers" are just trying to live, and they take a telemarketing job to pay the bills. They often do not have a degree from college, and are trying to support their families. The read from a script, and are doing their jobs. The companies are who we should be upset with.

Please re-register your number in order to remain on the list. You can call the Do-Not-Call registry at 1-888-382-1222 or go online to www.donotcall.gov. In order to register your number online, you will need to provide an email address. After that, you will receive an email to which your must respond within 72 hours. If you do not respond, your number will not be included on the Do-Not-Call list. The earliest that a phone number may be removed is June 2008.

7. Its not the callers. Its the companies behind them
And they are a bane to civilization. If only there were a way to torture a corporation I would approve it in a heart beat.

5. Oh great. The only singular legislative act in the last nearly 7 years that favored the citizenry
and not the corporate benefactors and was not labeled with disingenuous nomenclature is scheduled to sunset.

But none of the others.

Saw somewhere that when you are kicked off the list is based on when you signed up and that if you sign up close to the anniversary you'll not have to sign up as soon then next time it sunsets. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

9. REGISTRATION IS VALID FOR 5 YEARS and can be renewed, so don't panic!
It will expire only for people who registered when the service first became available, 5 years ago. They can easily renew.

From the MSN article cited by the OP, scroll down half way:
There's just one problem: Registration of your number on the Do Not Call list isn't permanent. After five years, the ban on calling your number is lifted unless you renew your registration.
That means a whole lot of folks are going to start hearing from telemarketers next summer unless they take action.

10. We were supposed to be getting a list here in Canada
Edited on Fri Oct-05-07 03:53 PM by ironflange
After the last election, though, all mention of it suddenly vanished. Mayhaps the Conservatives didn't like it? In the meantime, we've been getting, I kid you not, at least a dozen calls a day from telemarketers. It's driving us nuts. It's reached the point where we don't answer the phone if it's not a number we know, and none of these will leave a message. God damn them. The worst are the ones where you answer, only to hear, "All our operators are busy. Please wait for the next available one." Screw that, it's bad enough being put on hold when you call someone, but when they call you?!?

OK, thanks for the forum, I feel much better now. No, actually, I don't.

This site comes in handy at times:

http://whocalled.us

Punch in the number and you might find out who's trying to pry money out of your fist.
