Feel like giving the campaign bloodletting a rest? Fred Thompson's first debate is tomorrow...

He can act, but can he debate?
Untested Fred Thompson faces rivals for first time

In an unusual political season that seems to offer up a presidential debate every week or so, the Republican debate tomorrow is expected to offer something new: Fred D. Thompson.

Untested in debate against his opponents until now, Mr. Thompson, a late entrant to the race, chose to skip the last contest in favor of announcing his candidacy on “The Tonight Show” early last month — a decision for which he was roundly criticized.

(snip)

Tomorrow, Mr. Thompson will be facing a field of candidates who are already veterans of numerous other presidential debates and well-versed on the issues. But so far on the campaign trail, Mr. Thompson has stumbled at times when pressed for his views on certain local and national issues, like not knowing of the fight over oil drilling in the Everglades and in referring to Russia as the Soviet Union.

To help prepare, Mr. Thompson, who has also been an actor, has enlisted the aid of Alfonse M. D’Amato, the former senator from New York, who has been playing the role of Mr. Giuliani. But whether these rehearsals will help is an open question.

If he blows it, the GOP race could be seriously shaken up.

And, hey...we can jump up and down on a Republican for a change of pace.

;)

Psst...

1. For someone touted as the next Ronald Reagan ...
he seems to be more like the next James Stockdale.

2. If nothing else, this might be humorous. I think the man is
a box of rocks myself, or evidence of scraping the very bottom of the barrel.

5. Buy a rug, Fred
You too, Rudy. We haven't elected a president sporting the shiny look since Ike.

7. In these "debates" all he really has to do is repeat talking points
It's probably easier than getting interviewed by Leno, who may throw in a curveball or two.

Unless he totally bombs, I suspect he'll have a good amount of Freepers lined up to follow him after the debate.

8. This is the first R debate to which I've looked forward with some anticipation.
The other R campaign doyennes have been sharpening their teeth in anticipation of publicly unseating Thompson from "front runner" status.

Hopefully, the camera will cut to his blushing bride in the audience, once in a while, as a bonus.

10. Once again, Will, you're completely missing the point. It's not what he says,
its how he looks while saying it.

Now, what was your point? Anyway he has the purdiest wife in the whole wide world. And young? She is the youngiest of all.

Can you imagine that fuckhead being president? Please don't answer that.

12. She won't be on stage
and I think the others will test him sorely. Flavor-of-the-month no-debating "front-runner" who's made of smoke and baritones...yeah, the others don't enjoy him.

Could be a two-fer if Rudy goes after him, he goes back at Rudy, they both have a meltdown, and America says, "Wow, they're batshit crazy." Romney gets the nod, the GOP base stays home rather than vote for a Mormon "cultist" (their description), we win, thanks for comin' out.

:)

Hey, it sounds good, anyway.

I just want to see how he handles the gang-stomping he's in for, basically. I love the smell of napalm in the morning...

17. I hope Fred says, "He keeps forgetting about Pluto!"
Thanks for the heads up, Will. I'll be watching. Fred reminds me of Barry Switzer. Dumber than hell, and couldn't care less.

20. Good idea.
I think it is important to watch the republican debates. Old Fred adds to the mix. He might help to further fracture their party.
