Is Columbus Day not observed where you're at?
Edited on Mon Oct-08-07 07:53 AM by usaftmo
In Florida (Pensacola) today is a regular school day, and it was last year as well.

This is my first experience where Columbus Day isn't observed as a Federal Holiday. What's going on?

I read the below article, and it refers to a few locations that don't observe it as a way of referring to the cruel manner the indigenous people were treated.

1. Columbus was a murderous thug, who caused the deaths and
enslavement of millions of innocents.

2. Agreed - Columbus Day should be a day of mourning, not celebration

6. Then why do we have President's Day?
To include morans like raygun, shrub, poppy, and nixon with great Presidents such as Clinton, Carter, and Kennedy is upsetting to me.

I do have mixed feelings on the issue.

In elementary school Lincoln's Birthday and Washington's Birthday were separate, and we got both days off. Not sure when Washington's Birthday got renamed President's Day.

3. YoHo Columbo
his ___ are fat and round-o

I think it is becoming a who cares holiday. It was a government holiday for many years (20th century only), more a reason for government workers to have a 3 day weekend. But other days through the year have been added and this one may be allowed to die.
I know the Native Indians would like to see it end.

Denver Columbus Day protest on international terror watch list

From the headline, why an American Indian protest needs to be on the international terror list is beyond me.

4. Hey. Remember the bit about the cookie eating, middle-aged folks in California who were onthe list?

They just do it to justify their own existence..
No REAL terrorists are stupid enough to be so obvious as to be put onthe list.

5. I guess Columbus was an earlier version of multinational corporation.
On top of that he must have been one of the original scam artists/slippery salesmen, since he didn't know where he was going when he went, went to the wrong place, assumed he owned everything in sight, didn't know where he'd been when he returned and he did it all on borrowed capital.

He's not a very popular figure in my particular circle, although my wife, who works at a bank, has the day off--or would have had, since she is on vacation this week.
