Novak: Wilson did not forcefully object to naming of CIA wife in column

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/novak-wilson-did-not-forcefully-object-to-naming-of-cia-wife-in-column-2007-10-06.html

Columnist Robert Novak said Saturday Ambassador Joe Wilson did not forcefully object to the naming of his CIA operative wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, when Novak spoke to him prior to the publication of a column that sparked a federal investigation and sent White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby to jail.

“He was not terribly exercised about it,” Novak said.

Instead, Wilson focused on not being portrayed as simply an opponent of the Iraq war. Wilson also stressed that his wife went by his last name, Wilson, rather than Plame, Novak said.

...

“It was an off-hand remark to a question I asked in an interview I requested,” Novak said. “This was not a conspiracy in the federal government to go after Valerie Plame Wilson.”

Novak said he complied with prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s subpoena to testify because his lawyer told him he had no legal grounds to resist, and losing a court fight could erode the legal protections of the press. He noted that, as a syndicated columnist, he had to pay the legal fees himself, to the tune of $160,000. His home newspaper, the Chicago Sun-Times, contributed $30,000, he said.

1. Ah
so the issue is not whether Wilson objected, but whether he did so with the proper forcefulness.

What a douche.

5. No government conspiracy, Mr. Douchebag for Liberty?
The jury in the Scooter Libby case disagreed with you when presented with the facts in open court. And then Bush commuted Libby's sentence so he wouldn't feel obliged to talk to Fitzgerald's investigators any further.

Let me just say it's rather insulting that you think people are this fucking stupid. But then again, that's been your audience for decades, and I'm sure you're too old now to learn how to be a real writer.

7. There may have been a conspiracy, but
the jury didn't say so. Libby wasn't charged with conspiracy, and nobody else was named in the indictment as a co-conspirator. He was convicted of obstruction of justice, making a false official statement, and perjury before the grand jury, all for lying to FBI agents investigating the Plame case and to the grand jury.

Your argument may be valid, but the jury didn't find that there was a conspiracy.

12. What's that feathered quacking thing, that's waddling to the pond?
Libby's obstruction prevented the government from making the conspiracy case. Else, what was he obstructing?

Look at the events we know about. How can you say there wasn't a conspiracy?

If a bank is robbed, and no one is convicted, would you say the robbery never took place?

13. The jury was never asked.
Fitz knew the law concerning disclosure of classified info was week, and that the case would be hard to make.

11. You know, I held up the corner store last night.....the clerk didn't scream or anything, he just put
his hands up and then proceeded to hand me all the money out of the register. So I guess he was ok with what I was doing?! Who could really say, I mean he could have screamed or something....

16. So now you can commit any crimes you like,
so long as one of the parties affected does not forcefully object beforehand. That makes sense.

20. I wonder when this particular Wilson-Novak discussion
took place. July or September/October?

It had to be when the "not being portrayed as simply an opponent of the Iraq war" bit was important, so I'm going to guess July.

21. Novak is one of the most reprehensible creatures ever to call
Edited on Tue Oct-09-07 09:00 AM by rasputin1952
himself a "journalist". He is nothing more than a RW hack, and while he had some credibility about 40 years ago, he has squandered that small amount years ago. There was a time when he was actually a half-assed investigative journalist. I didn't agree w/a lot he found, but he did bring out a lot of corruption in Chicago politics.

These days, he's eased into punditry. Just another toe-the-line neo-con mouthpiece that can't get past 9 AM w/o an infusion of Scotch. What he did to Plame/Wilson was on the edge of treason, he should have been indicted and tried. Makes me wonder how much of a DP supporter he would be if he faced it for treason? I'm, willing to bet he'd become a serious DP opponent if he was facing swinging in the breeze...:)

23. What a joke
A CIA agent told him not to publish the story. Novak claimed that since this agent didn't tell him why and also wasn't forceful that it was ok to print it.

Neither the CIA agent nor Wilson could give him more details because they would have been at risk of exposing her as a covert agent.

It is not a crime to repeat the name of a CIA agent. The crime is exposing their identity when you know they are covert.

So Mr. Novak, if Wilson had been more forceful he may have outed his own wife.
