What happens after libby is convicted?
Assuming no pardon, or even with a pardon what happens next? Where do we go from there we get an obstruction of justice conviction what doors open, does the information gained at this trial lead anywhere? What's next?

2. The bu$h regime will go right back to what they were doing
Libby will sit in prison for a few weeks and when no one is looking bu$h will say "Pardon me is that Scooter?"

3. An appeal is filed immediately, Libby serves little to no jail time.
Bush issues pardon before he leaves office.

It's a done deal. We just have to make sure Bush isn't in a position to issue any pardons.

4. Fitz's task is still to find out who leaked..
With Libby's obstruction out of the way he's free to pursue the leaker, no?

6. This is what I'm wondering
A conviction looks to be a slam dunk from here, I've been so caught up in just getting scooter in prison I haven't been able to look down the road, there is still the leaker to find and punish.

5. Well, there's all this interesting information lying around
out in public view. The Dems in Congress will probably be annoyed at having to step over it all the time as they wander around in their customary state of oblivion.

7. The facts coming out of the trial can be used elsewhere
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 04:10 PM by sph812
When facts are determined in a trial, they are good as gold (unless the appeals court finds an error in the admissibility of evidence that would prove a different set of facts). Therefore, regardless of whether Libby is convicted, the facts certified in this trial can be used in other proceedings. For example, the Wilsons can use these facts in their civil suit. If Fitzgerald decides to indict others, he will have some solid ground in which to base the indictments.

This is the genius of Fitzgerald only indicting Libby so far. Because the core crime of the leak is not being tried, Fitzgerald did not have to disclose to any defendant what knows about it. He only has to provide info relating to the perjury, false statements, and obstruction of justice. Therefore, he can take more time in building his case as well as sit back and watch what the theater in the Libby trial will produce in terms of facts pertaining to the leak and then proceed from there.

8. Libby goes to Club Fed for a few months before his presidential pardon.
The DC establishment overlooks the embarrasing things that were unearthed by this trial and life goes on.

Valerie and Joe Wilson will bring a civil suit against the Bush Administration which will probably not happen until after Bush leaves office.

Sorry, I'm sick and in a cynical mood.

9. Possibility for plea bargain?
With a guilty verdict, and time before the sentencing, Fitz will have a decent amount of leverage. He could offer Scooter the opportunity to rat out Bush and Cheney in exchange for a light sentence.

Though the problems are 1. Fitz may be about to be fired by Torquezales. 2. Scooter's in this mess for perjury, so anything he says is suspect. 3. Bush is likely to pardon him.

Though a pardon introduces another scenario: Once pardoned, Libby get subpoenaed by Fitz and asked to testify about his crimes. Since he's already pardoned, the Fifth Amendment no longer applies. Scooter's already been through the ringer once for perjury, so he may be uninclined to try his luck again under oath. If I were Bush, I'd wait until the day before I left office before issuing the pardon, to minimize the damage from this.

10. Libby gets pardoned, leaves the country.
That way he's beyond the reach of a US prosecutor. Or maybe he has an unfortuante airplane accident. Or his car's brakes fail.

11. Don't you think it would be dangerous to * and co to leave
scooter sitting in prison? especially for so long, he knows too much for that, if he were left in prison it would be to their advantage for him to meet with an accident while there.
