Naomi Wolf: American Tears
Naomi Wolf
American Tears

I wish people would stop breaking into tears when they talk to me these days.

I am traveling across the country at the moment -- Colorado to California -- speaking to groups of Americans from all walks of life about the assault on liberty and the 10 steps now underway in America to a violently closed society.

The good news is that Americans are already awake: I thought there would be resistance to or disbelief at this message of gathering darkness -- but I am finding crowds of people who don't need me to tell them to worry; they are already scared, already alert to the danger and entirely prepared to hear what the big picture might look like. To my great relief, Americans are smart and brave and they are unflinching in their readiness to hear the worst and take action. And they love their country.

Is it treason yet?

This is an open invitation to honorable patriots on the Right and in the center to join this movement to restore the rule of law and confront this horror: this is not conservatism, it is a series of crimes against the nation and against the very essence of America. Join us, we need you.

This movement must transcend partisan lines. The power of individual conscience is profound when people start to wake up.

1. Thank you for posting this. It's my hope Naomi Wolf's latest book will become
a huge best seller and get everyone to at least CONSIDER what she's saying. It's crucial for the future of our country.

3. From reactions here, at times I have my doubts
You see if this was truly fascism, we would not be able to post...

Yes, that has been posted

6. Just because we can post now doesn't guarantee we'll enjoy the same
freedom in the future.

9. A big part of the problem is that most people don't realize...
Just what fascism is. They think totalitarian or despotism, which grow perhaps inevitably from fascism. First one must recognize that fascism is not really related to the authoritarian components. I mean they have separate dials and can exist separately. When fascism is narrowly defined, and properly so IMHO, as the government protecting corporations, then clearly we've been a democratic fascist nation since 1959 or even longer. The real problem with fascism is that eventually the corporations get greedy enough and the government gets corrupt enough, that the hive mind says screw the people. The people rise up, the government cracks down, and then you have an authoritarian flavored fascism, police states and despots.

The founders understood these dangers and gave us tools to overcome it without bloodshed. Hopefully enough of the nation can be awakened soon enough to use them.

11. The irony is that Germany wasn't really all that fascist
It was however imperial and totalitarian. Certainly not as fascist as Italy of the day.

What we seem to be dealing with is a fascistic fueled imperialistic conquest attempt. Win loose or draw the corporations have raided the treasury. They don't have to win to win, they just need to draw out the process as long as possible.

Politics is simply overhead.

16. I am reading a book right now -

I'm reading a book right now - They Thought They Were Free - The Germans 1933-45. They didn't believe it or see it coming until it was too late to do anything about it. I used to think we'd be smarter than to allow that to happen here, we'd be different and DO SOMETHING to stop them. I'm not so sure now. I still get a lot of people rolling their eyes or saying I am nuts when I try to tell them what is going on that they don't know about.

20. When the media ignores the corruption...

instead focusing all its energy on human interest and tabloid journalism; when the government does whatever the hell it pleases, ignoring the people; when the judciary is biased towards the corrupt government; and when elections are engineered to be close with just enough election fraud to allow the government-favored candidates to win, then does it really matter what people are allowed to post on blogs? We need to be clever to attack the problem at its source.

18. READ Wolf's interview with Buzzflash, or her book -- she doesn't talk specifically about "fascism"
per se, but rather the shutting down of democracy, and the steps by which this occurs. And she certainly doesn't say that we have fascism AT THIS POINT.

27. I know she is not talking about fascsim
I am readying the book

But people's minds immediately go there, and that is the immeidate retort

For the record... it is a new form of corporatism, which by definition IS fascism... which is defined economomically. not politically

What she is talking about is the closing of formerly democratic societies, whether this is Nazi Germany, or Argentina or the USSR...

7. Folks used to laugh or yawn when I brought up politics. Not any more...
Even at trendy clubs and parties you know longer hear "Oh, don't bring that up here." Since there is no where else, folks have begun to listen. The problem lies with how we spend our time: rattling keyboards, thumbing hand-helds, "spinning with devices." Last I heard, none of these things substitutes for one-on-one conversation, let alone political organizing around a real, live, sweaty community. And no where is community legitimized except on MSM, weak, withered and imperfect as it is.

8. This is so ugly. I went to the AFC site and signed up, then to the Guantanamo
site and signed up. On both I was encouraged to send a link to my friends. I didn't because hell, don't want to get THEM put onto a list!

Even if that wouldn't happen, I'm afraid of the possibility. It's like saying the terrorists have already won because of the fear we live with now.
It disgusts me that I view Bushco the same way I view terrorists - as a threat to my very way of life.

21. So your claim is nothing has changed?
The NSA spying, the torture prisons, the detain and releases, the signing statements, group infiltrations, incarceration without charge,.....and so forth are just machinations of the imagination? We're all fine here and the "war on terror" with no defined end really is nothing at all to worry about?

29. This part really gave me chills:
"Someone else says that his friend opened his luggage to find a letter from the TSA saying that they did not appreciate his reading material. Before I go into the security lines, I find myself editing my possessions. In New York's LaGuardia, I reluctantly found myself putting a hardcover copy of Tara McKelvey's excellent Monstering, an expose of CIA interrogation practices, in a garbage can before I get in the security line; it is based on classified information. This morning at my hotel, before going to the sirport, I threw away a very nice black T-shirt that said "We Will Not be Silenced" -- with an Arabic translation -- that someone had given me, along with a copy of poems written by detainees at Guantanamo.

In my America we are not scared to get in line at the airport. In my America, we will not be silenced."

I've haad similar concerns re: what sort of reading material I carry on or pack in my luggage.

Jeebus H. Christ on a trailer hitch -- 10 years ago, who ever would have thunk it -- that US citizens feel they must censor their reading material when they travel???
This is most certainly NOT the US that the founders envisioned.
