Hitchens is more of a gin-tossed ass in person than I ever imagined.

Just back from the FFRF convention where Christopher Hitchens was the keynote speaker. What a pompous, self-important, pretentious prick! The Freedom From Religion Foundation is apolitical & not partisan; he was asked to stick to the subject of atheism and not journey into politics. Of course given a room full of atheists who are at least active enough to spend a few hundred bucks to attend a conference, someone is going to bring up the issue of Iraq.

He was fine for about the first thirty minutes, but then after about his third glass of booze and almost lighting a cigarette twice, he veered off into his support of the war. OK, "support" is a bit of an understatement. This chickenhawk not only thinks occupying Iraq is a good idea, he's a big bomb Iran fan and his Iraq-tion doesn't stop there. Hitchens is advocating the complete annihilation of the muslim religion...as in genocide. According to him we need to engage in a "worldwide jihad".

Then came the Q&A and it got much worse. He insulted, intimidated and belittled anyone who didn't agree with him. He told the crowd of about of 700 that anyone who didn't vote for Giuliani is a moron.

In a few days there should be a video up at http://www.wisconsineye.org / and you can see for yourself what this shithead is really like when he's not constrained by broadcast rules.

Unfortunately he seems to have a lot of support in the atheist community. Although I cannot for the life of me understand how someone can think their way through religion and rationally arrive at the position of atheism and still be conservative. But as one woman commented "Not all atheists are liberal Democrats; I'm a libertarian and I'm voting for Rudy." :eyes:

Edit beuz I caint type er spel

1. I can't stand the bastard after seeing him on Real Time a year
or so ago - the way he treated Galloway (sp? the MP that helped with the Downing Street Memo's) (do I have that correct?)

Anyway - what an asshole - wouldn't let Galloway speak, ran rough shod all over him, totally dominated the show and I think he was drunk then too.

I can't believe Bill lets him back on the show after that heinous performance.

2. He has a lot of support in the "Mother Theresa was an evil WITCH" community too!
She may not have been a saint, but she did have her moments. He also has a thing about Princess Diana. He loves to upset and excite, I guess it makes the nitwit feel as though he is actually alive, instead of pickled and faking it.

The man is an ass. A complete, total, booze-addled ass.

6. There's apparently a book on line written by an Indian doctor that is a lot better than Hitchens
And it has proper documentation

10. The stuff about Mother Theresa has been around for years
I remember seeing stuff on the news about it (remember when they did real news, tackled serious subjects?) I'm not surprised someone else did a better job than Hitchens. I always thought Hitchens sucked as a reporter.

"He told the crowd of about of 700 that anyone who didn't vote for Giuliani is a moron."

Maybe he was slurring his words and meant to say "Anyone who votes for Giuliani IS a moron"....including Hitchens.

There are funny drunks, sleepy drunks, sad drunks and mean drunks. He definitely falls into the latter category.

Fuck 'im.

4. Ugh! Where do I look on the site for when it does come out?
The video archive? Like it would first go in there as the freshest entry?

Thanks!

5. The headline left out the normal honorific for Chris Hitchens, it is "The Gin Tossed" Hitchens,
as Galloway so often points out. . .

Oh, how a former brillant essayist has fallen! But he is like Wolfowitz, saving the world from itself one invasion at a time, eh?

12. Outstanding! "Gin-tossed" is such a good adjective. . .
Of course, in Britain we would have to say "tired and nervous" . . .

8. I think I'll avoid that video.
Even if he were less warmongering, his condescension and arrogance is too much for me. I wonder if he really has that much support among Atheists. I can't help thinking he saw the success of Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris and decided to jump on the bandwagon.

Of course it helps that he's a loud mouth. The media loves a loud mouth so he gets a lot of air time from that.

11. I think his stance on Muslims is why he's getting so much attention
Or why his books are getting pimped, to put it quite bluntly.

The lets-nuke-the-middle-east crowd has already runs its course through the Evangelical Christians; maybe they think they'll come up with a new demographic via Hitchens. Though I find it hard to believe the majority of atheists would fall for Hitchens' crap; maybe it's like most things, a small, bellicose minority. Let's hope so.

15. He was just one speaker; part of a much larger three-day convention.
But there were quite a few who came just to see him, so the answer to your question is "yes".
