Edwards is RIGHT! Dems need to Draw A Line in the Sand & Swear Off Corp Campaign $$$$$....
Now that the big money corporations see that Democrats will likely sweep elections in 2008, the corporate money is 'switching' to Democrats from Republicans.

THIS is the CRITICAL TIME.

We cannot replace one set of corporate owned Repub politicians with a new set of corporate owned Dem politicians and expect there to be any significant changes made after taking office.

John Edwards is right about making individual contributions count by lowering the total amount that can be given and have the Govt match the smaller contributions to give individuals the same financial influence over politicians as corporate contributors.

We need a candidate that isn't owned by corporate America.

3. Support public funding of elections.
I'm with Edwards on this one as well. Thank goodness he's rich enough to forego the contributions he is losing by speaking out against all the strings that corporate dollars come with.

Oppose corporate personhood. Support public election funding.

4. He's right, but it's cost him his chance at the nomination I'm afraid.

He's unilaterally disarmed before his opponents have. Not the best strategy for winning, imo. I wish him the best though. We desperately need to rid our system of monetary campaign contributions.

5. In the current environment, you must take corporate cash to win.
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 02:18 AM by Selatius
Otherwise, without the money, you will be at a disadvantage as far as building name recognition. You need money for media buy to build name recognition. To be sure, you can win without it, but the odds are against you, and in most cases, you lose, but again not in all cases.

My best advice is to brazenly lie to corporate contributors. Lie to get as much money as possible. When you're in office, break your promises to them and push through campaign reform legislation. You have a short window of opportunity in such a case because the next time you are up for re-election, your former contributors will make you pay for attacking their base of power.

8. John Edwards, like Gore, is a leader who has come to us in the niche of time,
to steer us off this road to destruction. But, like Gore, I'm afraid that the evil forces in this country will prevail.

9. Why is it so HARD for Democratic Candidates to say NO to corporate $$ with strings attached?
There is more than enough $$ this election cycle to elect whoever becomes the Democratic Party Nominee.

Even if they have taken corporate campaign contributions, why can't they support an agenda that conflicts with the the pro-business/corporate agenda? IF they cannot do that, we have to ask how independent are they of the influence wielded by corporate contributors?

10. CNN online poll
Edited on Tue Oct-16-07 08:11 AM by Xap
in the last couple days showed that 92% of poll takers said their votes are not influenced by TV political ads. If that is more or less true across the broader electorate then I don't see any good reason for politicians to amass all that money for campaign ads anyway. Public funding could cover it.

I think it's largely the media themselves and their so-called "money race" that is driving the political advertising business for profit. Of course the candidates no doubt like having all that money at their command as well.
