Diplomacy is not "try to get as many friends as possible." Diplomacy is "by contact with other nations, effect a change in the world."
We may have ruffled China's feathers by supporting the Dalai Lama. However, China is something of a human-rights nightmare. If they intend to be a world leader, it is in the world's interest to pressure them into acknowledging the sanctity of human rights. By making its respect contingent on worthiness, the West pressures China to move towards a freer society. Our honoring the Dalai Lama embarrassed Chin, yeah--and that's a good thing.
Turkey? Eh. They're threatening an invasion of Kurdistan. Similar as to China, we're saying, "While we value your geopolitical usefulness to us, there comes a point where we value respect for human rights more. Don't push it."
Russia? Putin's playing Soviet Union. He isn't "pissed off" at us; he's not the type to get angry or act rashly. He's expanding his influence and butting up against ours. Tensions are going to occur, but that's expected when both parties are trying to bring entire regions under their sway.
