Incredible survival story...
FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (CBS) ― A Long Island dog-turned-MacGyver is making Lassie look like any other ordinary pooch. That's because Jackson, the massive 150-pound Newfoundland, somehow escaped harm during a house fire by jumping into a bathtub, pulling the curtain closed, and using the drain to breathe fresh air.
:wow:

1. I read somewhere about a cat
who clawed her way into the upholstery in a sofa and managed to dodge both flames and smoke in a house fire!

It seems dumb animals are not so dumb, after all.

7. I think the dumb
in dumb animals means mute - cannot talk - as in "deaf and dumb."

9. But animals can and do speak all the time. I'm not too up on dog, but I understand every thing my
cats say.

Cats can be very eloquent. Sometimes they are just succinct.

10. My cat talks all the time
She's become a real blabbermouth in her old age, a nuisance when her dish is empty in the middle of the night.

The only problem is a language barrier.

13. One of my hospital mascots (Tiggy, the cranky old diabetic) used
to address me first thing in the morning as Ma-Ma. He never said it to anyone else, and only as the initial daily greeting. He was very attached to me, and nobody else.

8. One of the characteristics that separate man from animal is the use of tools...
At least I think that's what I remember from my biology days. Anyway, I remember reading a story back in the 1970s about a cage of birds in which one bird used a piece of nesting (straw-like material as I recall) to pull closer seeds that had fallen out of the cage and were to far to reach with just the beak. The article showed a photo of the bird, beak extended as far as possible through the cage bars, with a piece of straw that was able to get behind a seed and pull it forward just enough to where the bird could simply snatch it up. I believe the article was pointing out that this bird had joined the ranks of man and certain primates that use tools.

This dog also displayed this unique trait. By pulling the curtain closed, the canine knew it could be used as a tool to impede the spread of smoke.

11. That was just ignorance and arrogance of people who don't know animals.
Many different types of animals use simple tools.

Otters use stones to break open clams. Birds (and other animals) have been seen using stones to open eggs (of other species of birds). Chimps use tools... one group of chimps even uses weapons when they go to war. (Yes, chimps do go to war over territory.)

17. You know, after seeing this video, I wonder if the report I read was about a caged crow...
...and how it used a stick (a piece of straw from the nesting material) to pull a seed forward enough to grab it with the beak. I remember the photo that accompanied the article and do remember a bird that looked very much like a crow (a large black bird).

Fascinating video!
