I went to a lecture by Ken Burns last night. He is a remarkable
talent that we are fortunate to have. He gave an excellent description of the challenges he and his team faced in taking on the daunting task of providing us with an intimate look into the wartime experiences of our parents and grandparents while maintaining the context of the world wide cataclysm into which they had been plunged.
The seamless marriage of image, words and music that he was able to achieve was on display in several clips that were shown. The documentary as exemplified by these clips refused to shy away from the horror of what was a necessary war.
The lasting image I will take from the film is the picture of 3 GI's walking into the distance with the injured colleague being carried on a rifle held by his two buddies. The unspoken message of interdependence exemplified the "we're all in it together spirit" of the WWII generation and stands in stark contrast to the current leadership's response to a dastardly attack which was more tax cuts and an admonition to go shopping and traveling.
If you get the chance to attend a Burns lecture, don't miss it.
