1. Six years ago, I would have said Bill Clinton....

.... but everything Carter has done out of office has only increased his stature, and that's not always true with Bill Clinton. I think history will view Carter much more favorably than he was while in office, and perhaps less favorably (i.e. NAFTA) for Bill Clinton.

That said, compared to what's in office now, they both look like FDR.

I like Clinton better than I ever did before. Maybe it's the contrast with *.

Carter has found his groove since moving out of the White House, but he totally sucked as president.

3. Jimmy Carter was the first ex-president...

....who decided to actually make a difference instead of attending fundraisers and playing golf 'til he croaked.

Gore and his post-vice presidency makeover, plus the collaboration of Clinton and Bush post-Tsunami, can probably be credited to Carter's example.

12. I think a little reading will show you there were plenty of ex-Presidents. . .

who went on to distinguish themselves in their golden years: J.Q. Adams entered the House and became a strong voice of reason against slavery and the Mexican Invasion; Hoover directed famine relief in Europe after WW2; Jefferson founded the University of Virginia.

Johnson retired to his ranch and brooded, Nixon spent all his years trying to rehabilitate himself by writing books, Ford spent his time on golf courses and board rooms, Reagan spent his time giving speeches for high fees until Alzheimers caught up with him, Bush I--again spending much of his time giving speeches and in board rooms and jumping from planes on his birthday. Truman pretty much retired to Independence, Coolidge did as little as an ex-pres as he did as president. Wilson was too ill to do anything of substance after his presidency.

But you left off your list Taft who made a better Chief Justice than President because that is what he always wanted to be.

So you are right there are examples of people who did accomplish great things after the presidency, but in the modern era I think Carter is the only true example. Clinton is trying.

Clinton - a good President and is doing fantastic as an ex-Pres. I don't really think he gets as much credit as he deserves.

7. Carter, imo, has been a great ex-prez and was a better prez than believed

and I think his standing in office will increase. What did he do as president? 1) His diplomacy in the Middle East led to Camp David and the Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel. 2) The Panama Canal Treaties 3) Formal diplomatic relations with China 4) Strongly against Apartied in South Africa. 5) Holding the banner for Human Rights (Signed International Covenant on Human Rights) 5) The Hostage Crisis doomed him, but he got every hostage out alive due to his negotiating (Iran was spiteful and waited five minutes after Carter was president to release them) 6) The Alaskan Lands Bill--one of the landmark conservation laws. 7) Superfund to clean up Toxic Waste Dumps 8) The First truly National Energy Program--which was showing signs of working and then Reagan dismantled it. 9) A Federal Dept of Education 10) A Federal Dept of Energy 11) Civil Service Reform 12) Established a "Windfall Profits Tax" on Big oil.

Compare that record with Bush and JC looks like another FDR.

I was young when Carter was in office. What I remeber most about him was his brother and peanuts.

PULEEZE!!!!! Are you kidding us? Carter was the biggest disaster that ever hit this country. Dear Kathleen you are spinning revisionist- He got the hostages out?
Surely you jest! He spent 444 days waffling about what to do. It was only till Reagen got elected that Khomeini Changed his mind. Carter had nothing to do with it. Did you happen to try to buy house during the Carter economy. Try 13.5% mortgage rates- then he had the nerve to blame on the US Population. The Panama Canal treaty? Oh thats great! He sold the rights to the Red Chinese. Very nice accomplishment. And as for Formalizing realtions with China that groundwork was done by Nixon NOT Carter. maybe you can fool some younger memebers on this forum lady but I witnessed your Peanut farmer in action.

K9, “That Khomeini changed his mind”?? “That Khomeini” didn’t dare kill one hostage under Carter’s watch; and Carter didn’t sit idle. Our military made a rescue attempt called Operation Eagle Claw, we lost FIVE airmen. How many of our soldiers and members of our civilian army died or were maimed under Bush‘s failed war? ... By the way, it was obvious “that Khomeini” was being spiteful when he let the hostages go just minutes after Carter left office.

...About those high mortgage rates during the Carter administration. Think about this, people actually had the money back then to buy homes and pay those rates. Under Bush, people are foreclosing on their homes left and right, all because they’re losing their jobs to people in China.

And as far as China goes...we’re so in debt to them, Bush got China owning us. Everyone owns us, we’re in debt to everyone. Our dollar is becoming worthless under Bush.

PS. Praise Carter because when Carter left office he didn’t join some investment firm like George HW Bush (a firm that profited so much from his son’s war that they recently bought over 7% of our NASDAQ), Carter became a champion for the homeless. Bush just produces more homeless.

we'd be energy independent today.

He got screwn by post-Vietnam stagflation and the October surprise.

he wasn't politically savvy enough in Washington and had a very bad relationship with the press.

20. If the US had actually followed through with most of JC policies

his Energy policy's especially. This country would be in much better shape and energy independent. Personally I think Clinton and NAFTA hurt this country.
