General Pace said he was not aware of the Baghdad briefing, and that he could not, from his own knowledge, repeat the assertion made there that the elite Quds brigade of Iran's Republican Guard force is providing bomb-making kits to Iraqi Shiite insurgents.

Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, the U.S. command’s top spokesman, said the decision to air the allegations against Iran on Sunday was made by the U.S. military and stemmed from concerns that Iran has been supplying militias with a deadly type of roadside bomb that could pierce thick armor.

“Our decision to publicly release this information was conceived, coordinated, and ultimately decided here at the (U.S. military headquarters in Baghdad)” Caldwell said in an e-mail message.

So is Caldwell making decisions around Pace?
