Giuliani woos religious right but loses poll

By Ed Stoddard 1 hour, 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney narrowly won a Republican presidential straw poll of Christian conservatives on Saturday, while Rudy Giuliani persuaded few to look past his support of abortion rights.

The poll at a summit of self-styled values voters was largely symbolic but highlighted the continuing failure of ardent anti-abortion social conservatives to rally behind a single Republican candidate in the 2008 White House race.

Romney took 27.6 percent of almost 6,000 votes cast, just ahead of Mike Huckabee, the folksy former governor of Arkansas, who gained 27.1 percent at the conference organized by the Family Research Council.

Maverick Texas Congressman Ron Paul was third with almost 15 percent while former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson got under 10 percent, a major disappointment for his campaign.

Giuliani was eighth with 107 votes -- under 2 percent.

kind of folk.

4. This may sound harsh...
...but I just have to say it.

Fred looks old. Really old. Like, scary old. His wife on
the other hand looks like she just fell out of an Abercrombie ad.

I understand that sometimes older men marry younger women, and
vice versa.

However, in this case--because he looks like Grandpa Simpson's older cousin--it
has the appearance of a dirty, old raisin getting down with a blonde teenager.

They just look really odd together. It doesn't smack of traditional
family values. I don't think the Fundies are buying it, and I think it
makes them uncomfortable.

2. As the nominee, enough fundies will stay home to deprive him of the presidency
Most of their crowd will reluctantly back him, but most is not enough in our politically divided landscape. If only 10% of the white fundamentalist Christians stay home, and perhaps a smattering of them vote for a third party, that would doom Giuliani.

Again, I expect MOST of the white fundamentalist Christians to hold their noses and vote for Rudy if he is nominated, but if they don't turn out in the same numbers as they did in 2004, and is Giuliani only gets say 75% of their votes, as opposed to the 80% that Bush won, then that can swing several states to our nominee.

3. I agree and that 3rd party candidate may just be ....
...a surprise to many. My very own district congress critter(gag ack yechhh) Ron Paul. VERY surprising support from that group. It wouldn't take much for Rickety ron to pull a Nader on the repugs.

10. Right, and Giuliani might only get 110% of it in 2008
So that's good.

8. What I think will happen
is that Giuliani will get the nomination, the religious right will back a third party candidate, and split the Republican vote.
