Pepperdine University covered in smoke. People are being evacuated to Zuma Beach.

1. The smoke seems to be rising
(straight) up more than earlier (when it was blowing almost sideways).

A good sign.

12. That's the one.
On Ch 7 they had a reporter on the phone that is good friends with the woman that owns that place. She said that it had been used for many charitable fund raisers. I hope that lady is ok.

17. Yeah,
an older structure apparently, a lot of other structures have better construction (e.g., tile roofs -- a great preventive measure).

Interesting fire, lots of spotting (apparently) in vulnerable areas.

It comes down to the wind basically. And you can tell a lot by watching the smoke blow.

Channel 13 has been fixating on the structures burning (changing now somewhat) and not really covering the geographical spread.

When driven by Santa Ana winds, these fires closer to the ocean tend to be limited in their spread by the ocean (and edge containment).

The lower elevations are a tinder box though.

but over the last few decades, there's been increased sensitivity to making structures and landscaping fire resistant. It probably didn't help that it was on a rise.

And my guess is that there was some risk-differential in what burned and didn't.

Topography has (apparently) been real important with this fire. With the wide-shots you can sometimes see places where the smoke is/was going nearly horizontal, and places where it rises/rose more vertically. (However, it seems chance has played a role.)

But even where the smoke goes pretty straight up, it'll rain embers downwind.

3. It took CNN about an hour to get coverage...
Faux and MSNBC were on it very fast.

It's a hell of fire with those winds. Look at the coverage -- the wind is blowing HARD.

I wish they would get the Pepperdine students and faculty out of the area. Sending them to designated shelters frightens the hell out of me.
