Californians near (but not too close) to the fires
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 02:02 PM by SoCalDem
if you want to help, here's something I have done and it's been well received..

Go to a grocery store.. buy bread & bologna/ham/salami..whatever and peanut butter & jelly..

Buy jugs of gatorade/water ..even that koolaidy stuff in gallon jugs

Make a BUNCH of sandwiches and stack them in the bread bag..

Drive to where the firefighters turn you back..

Hand those bags of sandwiches & cold jugs of drinks to the fireman.. he will make sure they get handed out..

3. I'm going to recommend V-8 and tomato juice.
More sodium and potassium to replace what's lost in sweat.

8. The last time I did it, the fireman I handed the goodies to, said
they had been "out in the field" for 22 hours straight.. This was a run of the mill Badland's fire on both sides of the 60 between us and Banning...

9. I'd love to do just that, but I'm right in the MIDDLE of a move, lol.
My foodstuffs are all in the apartment now but I got too tired to make one more run last night for my cooking pans/pots/utensils. That's tonight's job. Then I only have 3 or 4 more carloads.

The movers showed up at 8:30 Sat AM instead of in the PM when they were supposed to. The weekend went downhill from there. And I'm breathing all this smoke in the middle of it. Oy.

11. But don't feed the homeless or you'll get arrested.
In some towns anyway.

Arizona Ice Tea in jugs !!!!

Good idea SoCalDem!

15. My son is visiting Ramona, San Diego County, and was evac'd
He is now volunteering at a shelter for other evacuees.

It is a fine gesture but those sandwiches won't make it to those fighting the fire. They have fire camps set up for meals, showers, etc. Those at the roadblocks are typically law enforcement or local Sheriff Volunteers and will do nothing with the items. They will not drive this stuff to the fire camp where large kitchens are set up.

I suggest you take whatever goodies you have to one of the evacuee shelters.

17. They were for that one crew in my area.. It was a hand-crew
making firebreaks so it would not spread.. There were about 15 people..all visible to me from my car. I think they ate the sandwiches :)

16. I'll do that...
if I don't blow away first...can't believe the wind in Thousand Oaks.

You're right, the firefighters really do appreciate the goodies.
