All According to Plan-The displacement of black Louisianans helps turn the state red.

All According to Plan

Submitted by Bill Scher on October 22, 2007 - 2:03pm.

Conservative movement favorite Bobby Jindal cruised to victory in Saturday's Louisiana gubernatorial election, winning 53% of the vote in a multi-person race, far ahead of the pack and avoiding a runoff election against a single opponent.

But Jindal got roughly the same amount of votes as four years ago, when he won only 48% of the vote and lost the governor's race.

There were multiple factors at play. The Democratic leadership in the state suffered their share of the blame for Katrina and its aftermath, potentially strong opponents did not join the election, and the race was never close.

But we cannot ignore the new demographics of Louisiana, as conservative policies made it extremely difficult for African-American voters to come home.

The Politico's report on Jindal's victory notes:

Jindal’s victory heralds the GOP’s further ascendancy in Louisiana, particularly in the face of sweeping demographic changes after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Massive flooding sent many black Louisianans, who often vote Democratic, fleeing from the state to Texas, Utah and elsewhere. While the full political impact of the population shifts from the 2005 storms are still being revealed, it’s clear that Republicans are stronger than before.

1. It's a sad day indeed
when the son of recent immigrants can facilitate the displacement of people who lived there for hundreds of years and win political power. What a fugging mess.

2. Mission (sadly) Accomplished
And i noticed that buried in some of the articles about the election that there were also "glitches" with voting for New Orleans residents.

The injustice continues.

13. I wonder this, too
And since I live in a similar city, Seattle, which helps keep this state blue, I sometimes wonder if a major disaster struck here if we would share their fate.

The people of New Orleans were wronged, grievously so, denied help and cast adrift from home.

And who reaps the rewards? The GOP.

6. Contemplate the very worst of this administration and we will always come to find out
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 08:02 PM by ooglymoogly
it is much worse than any of us could have imagined. That is a constant that we must learn about this administration.

9. This Was Predictable And Noted At The Time Of The Displacement
Louisiana will be forever red... The only thing that kept it purple was the large African American population in New Orleans...

10. It was. The other piece that was noted at the time, however, was that the distribution
of Dem votes out into other states might alter those states to be more Democratic. I'd like to hope for that, but I also fear the Blue vote would be too diluted to mean much in other states.

11. Ugh. Nice to see acknowledgment that making NO vulnerable to natural disasters
like Katrina was intentional. And what horrific outcomes we're still seeing emerge from this horror.

12. Heh
Reminds me of John Cooksey's endorsement of Jindal:

"Fortunately, not all of the state's electorate is from Orleans Parish. Fortunately, many of the people who once composed a great deal of the electorate in Orleans no longer lives in Louisiana. Thus, they are not taking part in the patronage system which has existed in New Orleans for at least 150 years and is the source of so much corruption."

I don't think that Louisiana is a lost cause however.

14. The Fox TV station
(Hey, I was watching the baseball game, cut me some slack) actually reported at the polls' close that "Republican districts' turnout was strong, while black turnout was only 15%". I paraphrase, but that is close to verbatim...Blacks v. Republicans...WTF?!!
