News groups seek access to Jena Six case
News groups seek access to Jena Six case

By Michael Kunzelman, Associated Press Writer | October 22, 2007

NEW ORLEANS --A group of news organizations is seeking to open juvenile court proceedings for a black teenager charged with beating a white classmate in a case that sparked a huge civil rights demonstration in central Louisiana last month.

The Associated Press on Monday joined more than two dozen other organizations, including newspapers, television networks and network affiliates, in filing a court petition that challenges a judge's decision to seal Mychal Bell's case and close court proceedings to the news media and public.

The group seeks permission to attend upcoming hearings in the case, to review transcripts of previous hearings and other court records and to lift a gag order against participants in the case.

State District Judge J.P. Mauffray Jr.'s restrictions "substantially limit the (media's) ability to report to the public the facts about this significant case and unconstitutionally stifle the flow of information to the public," the petition claims.

1. Wait
The Media has had NO problem turning the other cheek and ignoring the stupidity, arrogance, and lies of the Bush Administration - but they have NO problem asking for THESE records to be opened? I call B.S. on them.

Mychal Bell is not a 'litmus test' for how 'Good' a job our media is doing at 'uncovering Conspiracies'.

And if this was ANY OTHER underage person - they wouldn't be 'going there'.

How about they ask for Cheney's records instead? Oh, wait, Cheney is out making Democracy free for Iraq but this one teenager in New Orleans is going to be example of how the media does do a good job?

Sorry, I'm having a really difficult time trying to understand why they do this - but they don't DEMAND Cheney open his records.

2. Really good point, and welcome to DU. I suspect the news orgs.
see salacious headlines here, vs. just politics as usual with Cheney. Or, as we know happens, they've been told to lay off the admin despite their screw-ups.

3. The media and the admin's special relationship started here ...
On Bended Knee: The Press and the Reagan Presidency

Oh wait; the media can ONLY do ONE thing at a time.

And, in case you missed it, Public Citizen has been in court for years trying to obtain Cheney's records, all the way up to the Supreme Court.
