Stark Apology Update Via Firedoglake: 'Stark told before vote - if no apology, censure would pass'

Update: From reader Cynthia R.:

I called Stark’s office in DC to complain about his apology. The person answering the phone told me that Stark had no choice; Stark was told before the vote was taken that should he not apologize, the vote to censure would pass. According to his office, that is the only reason he apologized.

I guess we better stop saying the House leadership can’t get anything done.

1. Strawman
The issue isn't whether or not the leadership can get anything done, but whether or not the leadership represents the interests of Democrats.

3. I guess you would have to ask Congressman Stark that?
Anything else would be just speculation?

13. The GOP only presented the bill - the House would have to pass it.
What Stark was told was that the Democrats would vote against him. Yeah Dems! :sarcasm:

23. If it was going to pass, that means it wasn't just the GOP.
It means they had Dems backing them up. :(

4. I knew it - but he did have a choice
So friggin what if he got censured - he would have been even more of a hero to a lot of us. The Repubs don't think any better of him now that he has apologized and I know Pelosi Hoyer & Co. are just breathing a sigh of relief that they squirmed out of this one. And the next time somebody opens his mouth the same shit will go down. All this did was give the wing nuts another opportunity to make fun of Dems for being spineless.

Unfortunately they are right.

10. That's how I read it....he was told to apologize, sit down and STFU...
...now who in the Dem party would tell him such a thing whilst simultaneoulsy threatening him with a gop censure resolution...Three names come to mind, Pelosi, Hoyer and Emmanuel...All three are spineless, gutless * enabling turds...

15. Congresswoman Corine Brown from My state of Fla was censured..
so what????? She would not back down!!

fly

http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/topstories/news-article.aspx?storyid=21452

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives censured Brown after a shouting match on the House floor Thursday night.
The argument started during a debate over HR-4818. The bill would provide international monitoring of the November presidential election. Congress has been considering an outside monitor due to all the confusion over the last election, and the "hanging chads" in Florida.

Representative Brown said, "I come from Florida, where you and others participated in what I call the United States coup d'etat. We need to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Over and over again after the election when you stole the election, you came back here and said get over it. No we're not going to get over it and we want verification from the world."

Those comments drew an immediate objection from Republican members of the House. Leaders moved to strike her comments from the record. The House also censured Brown which kept her from talking on the House floor for the rest of the day.

Congresswoman Brown responded to the matter in a statement late Thursday night. Congresswoman Brown wrote, "Striking my words from the House floor is just one more example of the Republican Party's attempt to try and cover up what happened during the 2000 election."

Brown also wrote, "When the words of Corrine Brown are stricken from the floor, so is the voice of her 600,000 constituents in Florida's 3rd Congressional District."

21. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY POINT
Reward brave women like this who wear this bullshit "censure" as a badge of fucking honor, not those who give in and weep for forgiveness.

Jesus, the man is what, 75? What is he protecting, his future in the party??

My disgust with the government has found no limit.

I expect the republicans to be weasels but I expected better of the democrats.

22. Why would any Democrat vote to actually censure this man?
The wording might not sit right with some people, but the merit and truth is there. Why would this even make it to the floor of the house in first place!??! They could have said they didn't agree with the word amusement, but the sentiment is the same!

Our own party eating its own. Instead of taking the fight where it matters - to the Republicans - they choose to fight our own people.

Disgusted. Just utterly disgusted.

27. because we live in
a country with only one party, the corporate party, with only a few people of integrity left and they told to sit down stfu and get with the program. It's a nice one too, you get to sell your soul and get money at the same time.

31. Bingo!
they took him aside and told him what would happen to him in graphic terms, i.e. "made him and offer he couldn't refuse."
this is the way the game is played, always has been, but now tougher than ever before.

it won't be long until we actually start to see the intimidation take place. that's the next step. much more effective in quashing dissent if the people see the retaliation take place. rather than just the results.

have to say tho, Stark's back down is pretty chilling right now.

fyi, review Naomi Wolf's "blueprint" for fascism

seems like something they would consider confidential.
