UK - Make all employees exercise for an hour, says top health adviser
Edited on Tue Oct-23-07 01:49 PM by RamboLiberal
A radical plan to improve the nation's health - including a workplace "exercise hour" - has been unveiled by a leading Government adviser.

New figures today show England is the fattest country in the EU. Now Professor Julian Le Grand, chairman of Health England, hopes to encourage people to improve their diets, give up smoking and exercise more.

He proposed the introduction of a smoking permit, which smokers would be required to show each time they bought tobacco. It is then their choice to go smoke free and not buy a permit.

Companies with more than 500 staff would have an " exercise hour". Employees would have to deliberately choose not to join in. The proposalsare the opposite of the Government's approach which requires people to opt in to healthy lifestyles. Instead it would be up to them to make the unhealthy choice.

Geez, IMHO Gret Britain is becoming the nanny state. That being said I would personally love it employers would design a gym with showers and allow employees time during the work day to get in a workout and encourage it. Personally I try to get a walk in at least for lunch. And they ought to offer some healthy stuff in the vending machines besides all the high fat high sodium chips, candy and sodas.

And while I could see banning smoking at work I don't want employers or health insurance providers meddle further and charge more for smoking, body fat, weight, etc.

And it's really stupid here how many schools have taken recess and gym classes (not the crap classes but good exercise classes and sports) out of the school day just so students can study for the test.

2. Won't happen in the company I work for.

Or if it does, they'll charge us for the time and tell us we have to pay it back.

Why, just last year, they showed their overwhelming generosity by letting us take an entire hour for Christmas lunch... as long as we gave up our morning & afternoon 15-minute break to make up the extra 30 minutes.
