A $46 Billion Slap In The Face
A $46 Billion Slap In The Face

Submitted by Isaiah J. Poole on October 23, 2007 - 12:53pm.

The irony of President Bush's demand on Monday for $46 billion in additional emergency spending for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan—an irony missed by most of the news media—is that it occurred as the Senate debated an appropriations bill for domestic education, labor and human services programs that President Bush has threatened to veto—over a comparatively minor $9.6 billion.

Once again, we have an administration fighting over what is, in the scale of a $3 trillion budget, dimes and quarters when it comes to needs of ordinary families, while demanding Congress shovel money, no questions asked, to feed the war machine in the Middle East. For anyone who really cares about spending priorities, the President's statement was a $46 billion slap in the face of a public sick of his budget posturing.

A read through the White House veto threat for the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill, S. 1710, offers a window into the absurdity of the administration's posturing. Among President Bush's objections:

# An allocation for the Department of Education that is $4.1 billion over the administration's request.
# An increase of $87 million over the administration's request for hospital preparedness grants. (Hmm, homeland security spending the administration actually criticizes.)
# A proposal to give the Department of Labor $1.3 billion more than the administration requested, most of which would be allocated to job training programs.

President Bush's request is over and above the nearly $200 billion already spent on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. And that money, in turn, as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid noted, is on top of the $450 billion in emergency funds Congress has authorized for the war since it began.

1. it seems like we have a congress fighting for us
but why, WHY do almost all of our representatives contineau to give blank checks then promise us "we'll get him next time" our congress is not two parties, it is one corporate party....and i do mean party. With just a few stragglers who do not feel like selling their souls. I weep for this nation because when push comes to shove they are all selling us out.

2. If it's not for Bush's cronies
he's not interested...and he has that damn pen of his to veto or sign stuff away.

"I will not be made irrelevant!"

3. Everything Bush does is an In Your Face type action
A report comes out that spying has been going on prior to 9/11 and before the outrage really gets going Bush orders Congress to pass a bill to expand that spying and ALSO give telcos immunity.

Everything is a slap in the face while Bush smirks.

15. It's too damn much fun for them,...and they profit, to boot, BIG TIME!!!!
How long have we been telling EVERYONE this junta intends to STAY IN IRAQ? How long?

The PNACers refer to this junta's policy as a geo-political and economic plan AND THEY MEAN IT!!! They just don't tell anyone that the geo and political and economic beneficiaries are their crew of crazies.

Can you tell I'm feeling very angry, this evening. I gotta' vent. Everything EVERYTHING I was taught and believed and invested in is being destroyed by a handful of arrogant, greedy assholes and I AM SICK OF IT!!!!

23. Funny how even those in the know deny how this cult will pull strings,...
,...to MAKE things happen. In spite of the information available to anyone willing to look, there are still those who INSIST this cult's involvement is a matter of "six degrees".

When you HOLD THE STRINGS, all kinds of possibilities are available with merely a handful of loyal players. All the rest are doing either their job or as ordered.

It doesn't take hundreds or even dozens to execute power. Only power is required.

5. They have solar powered street lights in Fallujah.
They showed them on the news this morning. I looked at it and thought how nice it would be to have solar powered public utilities here but it ain't gonna happen.

6. I believe he originally wanted to ask for the same amount he vetoed for the children's healthcare
Just to add insult to injury. But probably felt that would look too obvious. :puke:

11. Nearly a half a TRILLION for the hands of a few industrial-military corporacrats.
Boy O' and they make sure to trim every goddamn penny from our military, our vets, so that their profiteering arms and mercs buddies can make as much damn money as possible.

Yup. How many upstanding and decent and hard-working Americans, let alone the disaffected and impoverished are suffering the repercussions of this junta's "policies"? The whole country suffers but the brunt is on those whose only means of power includes their strong back and their loud voices. It's not fair. It's ANTI-democracy, ANTI-American and, certainly, ANTI-compassionate or decent or moral.

But,...those with the power to STOP the abuse of our system of government are stuck spinning their wheels in a game being called by those who don't give a shit about the rules.

When digging a hole to deep to step out of,...do NOT keep digging.

The money he requests for Iraq should be cut at the very least.

18. I was just hearing on the Rachel Maddow show that after the Black Hawk Down debacle,
a bi-partisan vote was passed informing the president -- you're getting this much money (whatever the amount was) and you will use it to get our troops out by (date). And that's what happened.

I don't understand why we haven't done that this time.
