"The homeless will ) be kitty-corner at the intersection of West Seventh and Fifth streets next fall: The RNC will be held in the Xcel Energy Center. President Bush likely will address attendees of the $150 million, four-day convention just feet from the shelter's front door.

The Republicans and Dorothy Day's clients already took their first steps toward being neighbors this week. Staff from the Committee on Arrangements, the Republican Party's convention organizers, were behind the lunch counter at Dorothy Day on Monday and Tuesday to help dish up the noon meal for hundreds of people.

Whether they'll remain in such proximity in September has been one of the most prominent concerns raised by officials planning the Sept. 1-4 convention.

The shelter's location could put the Dorothy Day Center inside the convention's security cordon, potentially closing the facility to the people who need it most.

The center, which closely guards its clients' privacy, also will be squarely in the glare of the world's media spotlight as the Republicans nominate a contender for the White House, attention all the more intense if the shifting national election calendar doesn't give the party a clear-cut winner by Sept. 1.

1. If they are homeless, they don't need the shelter.
Major :sarcasm:

It will be interesting to see what the RNC does with this. My guess is they will just close the shelter while the convention goes on.
