We’ve been having loads of fun with gay restroom goblin Larry Craig over the past couple of months, haven’t we? What we’ve been missing, though, is an on-the-record account from a source willing to come forward and tell what it’s like to have an actual romantic liaison with the Idaho Republican. Meet David Phillips, a local IT geek and bear-about-town.

Phillips was recently in a bar minding his own business when he heard Craig’s voice on the television. “I went pale and nearly vomited,” Phillips says. The article doesn't say how old the guy was, but from the pic, he's well into his 40s, at least. So 20 years ago, he was well into his 20s, and hanging out at, evidently, a gay hustler bar in DC.

Don't make me defend Craig, but this guy was far from "a child".

BTW, I don't agree with YOUR argument either. You have only this guy's story for what happened, and in your eagerness to throw Craig off the cliff (which, admittedly, I can understand), you are taking everything he says as gospel. I have known many 20 year old gay men (indeed, I was one myself, once) and I can assure you that very few of them were as naive and trusting as this man is claiming to have been. It's quite enough that Craig is a hypocritical, self-loathing asshole. I don't need hearsay from 20 years ago about how he made some guy feel bad to despise him.

But I was using the term because his level of sophistication when this incident took place was plainly NIL, as he himself said in his recounting of it. I didn't mean to aver that he was underaged, or jail bait, or anything of the sort.

That said, I do think this guy is telling the truth, even if you don't. Craig has more than a bit of the 'martinet' about him--I've worked around guys like that, who are mean, snippy shitheads.

FWIW, I know a few kids in their 20s who have the sophistication of 16 year olds. And I know 16 year olds who are wise beyond their years. It's not unreasonable to believe that this kid was a late bloomer. That sort of individual, who can be pushed around and intimidated, would be just the ticket for someone who's a closeted bully, like Craig seems to be.

For future reference, a "bear" is a hairy, usually heavy-set man. Gay bears are often into leather, tattoos, and motorcycles. Gay guys into bears are referred to as "cubs", and may or may not be bears themselves. Thin hairy men are sometimes referred to as "otters". Bears with gray or silver hair are referred to as "polar bears". That last one is my absolute favorite.

It looks very much like a marriage of convenience when you put those facts together. I'll bet folks in Idaho can figure that out now, too.
