"Straitjacket Bush" - Bush&Cheney Have "Clearly Gone Mad" (LAT)

Rosa Brooks:
Straitjacket Bush
The president's warmongering remarks on the Iranian threat suggest he is psychotic. Really.
October 25, 2007

Forget impeachment.

Liberals, put it behind you. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney shouldn't be treated like criminals who deserve punishment. They should be treated like psychotics who need treatment.

...........they've clearly gone mad. Exhibit A: We're in the middle of a disastrous war in Iraq, the military and political situation in Afghanistan is steadily worsening, and the administration's interrogation and detention tactics have inflamed anti-Americanism and fueled extremist movements around the globe. Sane people, confronting such a situation, do their best to tamp down tensions, rebuild shattered alliances, find common ground with hostile parties and give our military a little breathing space. But crazy people? They look around and decide it's a great time to start another war.

..........

Impeachment's not the solution to psychosis, no matter how flagrant. But despite their impressive foresight in other areas, the framers unaccountably neglected to include an involuntary civil commitment procedure in the Constitution.

Still, don't lose hope. By enlisting the aid of mental health professionals and the court system, Congress can act to remedy that constitutional oversight. The goal: Get Bush and Cheney committed to an appropriate inpatient facility, where they can get the treatment they so desperately need. In Washington, the appropriate statutory law is already in place: If a "court or jury finds that a person is mentally ill and . . . is likely to injure himself or other persons if allowed to remain at liberty, the court may order his hospitalization."

5. For Cheney, a borg regeneration chamber. For Bush, any place where doors lock from outside and
it's easy to hose down the feces he smears on the wall.

4. She has a great line a little later:
The U.S. is full of ordinary people with serious forms of mental illness -- delusional people with violent fantasies who think they're the president, or who think they get instructions from the CIA through their dental fillings.

The problem with Bush is that he is the president -- and he gives instructions to the CIA and military, without having to go through his dental fillings.

6. that's a great one. How come the public is 17 steps ahead of Congress?
We're in 2007, and they're stuck in 2002. After anthrax attacks, death of Wellstone, and Bush high approval numbers, I can see why they would hesitate. Now Bush has historic low approval ratings and the military and even intelligence agencies are in near-open rebellion.

But instead of siding with the overwhelming majority, they side with Bush and his corporate patrons.

7. Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity means unable to tell right from wrong
I think that when they, for example, out Valerie Plame, they do so knowing of its general effects and the "don't mess with us" message it sends.

Some forms of psychosis may possibly apply but those won't absolve anyone of criminal responsibility, which is the premise of the piece in the first place. So, psychoanalysis is fine, but I'd decline to accept the first paragraph's statement that law violators "shouldn't be treated like criminals who deserve punishment." At least not until legal insanity is proven by a preponderance of the evidence (and contrary to urban legend, it's hard to prove).

10. They are NOT psychotic. They are paranoid politicos, and Iran is just 2008 strategy.
The see domestic political advantage in the rhetoric. Note that this rhetoric has been ongoing from day one. They are genuinely paranoid, but also, they are playing politics for domestic consumption. It is just another trap for the Dems too.

if both the President and Vice President are removed. I thought it was the Speaker of the House. I'm confused now.

19. Impeachophobia Is The Real Mental Illness
Impeachment "treats" both crazy and evil -- by moving the patient away from the sharp objects.

Impeachophobia's a harder nut to crack as the patient is actually further removed from reality.

Besides, bushcheney syndrome effects very few people while Impeachophobia is an epidemic inside the DC beltway.

stripped of power. He's boxed in and unable to further harm the nation.
